Exclamation Hind leg not moving

Yuki is close to being 2.5 years old and she's getting progressively worse.

I noticed today whilst she was trying to run in her wheel that her left leg wasn't moving. She's also either constantly biting it or obsessive grooming, but she doesn't seem to be drawing any blood.
The vet says there's nothing to be done, it's simply old age. She doesn't look like she has suffered a stroke.

Any suggestions please?

Hi I am sorry to hear that. Did the vet examine her? Is it some kind of arthritis? It sounds like it is bothering her so if the vet examined her maybe some pain relief from the vet would help. xx

The vet didn't say anything about painkillers. Maybe I should have suggested it? Her leg is dragging when she's walking.

This is the first time I'm experiencing this with my hamster cause none of my previous hamsters had this condition.

she is a old lady but she doesn't sound to be comfortable on that leg and she shouldn't be dragging it and biting it so it must be irritating her or painful. I'd take her back and ask about a painkiller or anti inflammatory like maybe metacam?

Hello Azula. I can't believe Yuki is 2 and 1/2 already! I wonder if she had a stroke and the dragging leg is annoying her. I have heard of animals biting a numb feeling limb. I've seen dogs do it. The vet might be able to tell. I really hope he can help her.

Hi! Yeah, Yuki's really old and it's showing. She's also an incredible fighter.

I noticed she didn't drag fer foot this morning as much, but it seems she's overly grooming both of her hind legs now. I think she also has trouble pooping cause every time I pick her up, I see poop stuck there with a white tip which I believe means it has been stuck there for a while so I help her get it out with a q-tip.
She also tried to drink from her water bottle, but after a few sips gave up, so I lifted her closer to the bottle and she continued drinking. She's eating, but is now a very picky eater with her hamster mix. She does eat raw food and boiled egg white with no problem.

Is it possible she has arthritis cause of how she walks? She just wobbles around.
My vet's okay, but he's not as experienced with hamsters. I think I'm the only one taking hamsters to him tbh, but he's the only one who does see them.

Yuki recently had an abscesses on her wee, but I managed to drain it and the vet gave me baytril. The treatment was 7 days long, but it didn't remove it entirely. It's still there (maybe 5% of what it was when I first started treating her), but it's not growing.

She also has a huge lump on the right side close to her hind leg. She has had it for 2 months now, but it never seemed to bother her. The vet said it's either a tumor or an abscess, but because of her old age a surgery is a big no no. Maybe it finally started causing problems, even tho it's on the other side?

Yuki doesn't squeak or anything similar, just overly grooming her hind legs. I really don't know what to do now except to go back and ask for what you've suggested.
Should I remove the wheel even tho she just goes in now it to groom herself. It's her grooming spot. Do I put less bedding in her cage so she can walk more easily? I must admit, I' really clueless.

I'd take all of her toys and wheel out the cage, or anything where she'll try and use the leg much. Poor thing I'm sorry to hear about her decline. Seems she's lived a good long life though which is a huge credit to you.

Obviously if her quality of life becomes questionable it might be time to let her go peacefully, so you can be there to say good bye and how much you love her. Opposed to waking up one morning and she's gone.. that's your choice though only you know what is best for you little lady.

Good luck.

Lots of TLC and close attention from her mummy is key too. To ensure she can get to her water and food with relative ease.

Quick update: she seems to have stopped dragging the leg whilst walking. Strange.

I've already taken out the toys, but I'l remove the wheel as well. Thank you all for your input. I have giver her now a slice of apple and she wobbled to it. I again found some stuck poo and removed it. 2 days ago she was relatively fine and ran in her wheel. Yesterday it all went bad. If only hamsters lived longer.

That's good to hear. I'd still check with the vet about pain relief and have it on hand. Maybe she injured herself or maybe it is something intermittent. I have good days and bad days with my bad knee. One day it's almost pain free, then the next I can't take a step without pain. Those days I need my pain relief. xx
