Question Can I turn on light in bedroom?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this website/forum. Me and my boyfriend bought our very first hamster today, her name is Shady! We both haven't had any hamster before so this whole experience is new to us. I've read a lot of hamster websites (including this on) and watched plenty of Youtube video's to learn about hamsters. Everything is going fine, but I have a question. Do hamsters like light? We keep Shady in our bedroom and it's currently 11pm so it's pretty dark in our bedroom. Is it ok if we turn on the light in our bedroom whenever we're in the room? My boyfriend works nightshifts so he's awake at night and sleeps in till late (just like a hamster, lol) so we're used to having our bedroom light on till 4 or 5am. If we keep it on like we're used to will this mess with Shady's day/night rhythm?

Hello ladytanja. Yes, you can put the light on. Usually hamster sleep inside a hidaway or burrowed under the substrate and the lights don't usually bother them. I got into the habit of keeping a lamp lit in my bedroom 24/7 and it doesn't seem to bother any of my pets.

I think the main thing is a routine - so the lights tend to go out around the same time each night. Hamsters often wait till it's dark to come out and do their night time things, but their habits vary in that way. Ours won't come out if there's a light on, or will go back in his house if someone comes down in the night and turns the light on. They don't see well at the best of times, and are night time creatures mostly, sleeping during the day (hence needing a house that's dark inside for daytime sleeping).

So if you tend to have a light on a lot at night in that room, it could be good to keep it to certain times when necessary and have low light, like a lamp, rather than a big main light, and not too close to the cage. Or have a red bulb in the lamp! I think there was a discussion on here a couple of years ago about what kind of light least affected hamsters at night, and I'm sure it said blue light was better than red. I'll see if I can find it. Edit - I think it's red light is ok as hamsters can't see the colour red - although presumably it's still lighter than dark!

Is there another room you could have the hamster cage in? I'm a bit confused actually lol! If your bf works nights, presumably he's not in the house?

This is the discussion

LED color?

I think they do need dark at night mostly and have circadian rhythms due to the light cones in their eyes sending signals to the brain and something to do with melatonin levels. Red light would be pretty difficult to live by for the humans though.

Something similar is supposed to happen with humans though, after 11pm at night. If you go to sleep before 11pm it's ok, but if awake after 11pm Serotonin levels increase and make you feel awak again apparently.

Humans have to adapt to night shifts I guess, so maybe you need a routine the hammy can adapt to as well. It sounds like the easiest thing might be to have your hammy in a different room from your bf at night!

I find it quite amazing though, just how "hard wired" they seem to be in their habits - sleeping during the day and being awake at night - it's clearly something more than light levels. Just like they continue the habit of hoarding and foraging for food, even when it isn't necessary. It's like a little in built program for their survival.

My boyfriend doesn't work fulltime but he needs to keep his night routine so that's why he'll be home and awake some nights. Yesterday we actually didn't use our bedroom light but only a small nightstand light on the other side of the room and Shady didn't seem to be bothered. But thanks for replying!

Sorry I forgot to say welcome to the forum I see what you mean about your boyfriend needing to keep the same routine. It's tricky if he needs light in the room though. It sounds fine how you said - I hope your boyfriend can manage like that too though. Could your hammy go in a different room maybe?

Congrats and welcome to you and Shady It would be nice if I could stay up longer at night but one night I did stay up almost all night and not all of the hamsters stayed up with me, especially Izzy, my Chinese hammie. She didn't come out at all while I had the light on in the living room, where I was with the hammies, all 6 of them.

Unfortunately we can't put her in another room at night. But last night went fine, the nightstand light doesn't seem to bother her and we're as quit as we can be whenever we're in the room. Even though we're only having her for 3 days now she seems to have already picked up a routine. At night she's playing, digging and running on her wheel a lot so she seems to be fine!
