Default Charlie has a hernia

i took my 4 month old syrian called charlie to vet this week to have a lump looked at and the vet said that he thinks its a hernia.
So the operation will be done soon at a cost of around £150.
Has anyone had any experience with hammy hernia?
Can anyone give me any advice on post op after care?
Thank you.

So sorry to hear that. As far as I'm Aware Charlie is at a good age to react well from an operation. Providing he's a good size I guess.

I've never had an experience with a ham having an op thankfully. I hope everything goes well for Charlie. Well done for spotting it early to give him a fighting chance.

Good on your vet for diagnosing the hernia early, it seems he's at a good age to have an op and recover from it well in comparison to a younger or older hamster

Hope all goes well with the surgery and that Charlie recovers well

So sorry to hear about Charlie, hope everything goes well, he is at a good age to react well from the operation.

My Sherbet who is 2 years old recently had a successful operation to remove a abscess from her cheek pouch. It best to take them to the vets in a carrier or a small cage with substrate, house, bedding from his cage this ensures that it smells familiar to him which helps when he comes around from his anaesthetic ( I kept Sherbet in her carrier until she fully recovered). Also put food and a water bottle (or a chunk of cucumber) in his carrier/temporary cage, when he goes to the vets.
When he get home ensure that he is kept warm and keep a good eye on him to monitor his recovery. If you notice anything you are unsure on contact your vets as they will be able to advise you if it's normal or not (I had to do this myself, which reassured me).
He may start to wander around and might fall asleep out of his house, so you may need to help him back to his house, so he won't get cold. Sherbet kept doing this as she didn't have the energy to walk back to her house.
He might not feel like eating after his operation until the following day.
But he might recover faster as he is younger than Sherbet.

I have my fingers crossed that everything will go ok!

Thanks everyone for the well wishes xx

Charlie is a good weight now at 138g so, yes hopefully as he is young too he'll be just fine.

SKB_Hamters

Thanks a lot for that info. It will be a big help to me during his recovery time. lots to keep in mind.
Glad to hear your Sherbet has recovered well too. x

Sounds like you have a good vet with knowledge about hamsters, so when is Charlie having his op?

Question Re: Charlie has a hernia UPDATE

Hi everyone

Just wanted to update this thread for you.

Well i took my little charlie to vet a few days ago all prepared for his op, i had his cage all ready for his return

a few hours after dropping him at the vet my mobile rang and my heart lept
the vet told my that charlie was fine and had been given a General anaesthetic but he didn't need an op as his lump is in fact his testicle!
Very strange
wish they had told me that before and saved me stress and cost!

Anyway his testicle is not returning back as it normally would but they are not going to do anything about it unless absolutely necessary due to risk

so now his testicle looks worse than ever and is just hanging down

Anyone have any experience with this? thanks
