Please help!!!
Hello,
So as some of you may know Nutmeg took a trip to the vets today, they said she was healthy and to keep an eye on her and her weight as I was worried that Nutmeg had either open or closed Pyo. They said that her vaginal area was very clean so I sort of dismissed the idea (but am still open to thinking) that it is open Pyo. She has shown signs of a pregnant belly and she is not overweight or pregnant! As soon as she got home from the vets she drunk a lot of water. She drunk for about 2 minutes! She weighs 39g and that is average for a Campebell's Russian Dwarf hamster hybrid.
So I am starting to believe that closed Pyo is present. She has been drinking whilst I am awake or just going to bed, no discharge is present, no faeces around or stuck to the vaginal area, a little smell and a belly that looks like she is overweight or pregnant. I know the symptoms of pyo and I know that spaying is the option to go for if she has it.
So to test for Pyo I need to LIGHTLY squeeze the hamster's tummy and if a lot of discharge with a strong smell comes out then she will have Pyo but how do I do this!? I am not confident handling hammies and the tummy in a hamster, I am assuming, like humans is just above the hips, just to make sure where is it, can someone give me a diagram please (I sound so stupid there XD). Can anybody help me and give me tips like: When and how to squeeze the hamster's belly lightly and in a way that reduces stress a lot. I am not confident but I need to do this. PLEASE HELP .

Re: Please help!!!
Poor Nutmeg
I'd suggest getting someone to hold her for you whilst you do it and give her some tasty greens to munch on to distract her
When someone says gently, they mean very gently. Only apply enough pressure to squeeze out discharge and if none comes out then don't squeeze harder - let go and try again, applying the same amount of force. Any more and Nutmeg could be hurt

Re: Please help!!!
Ok just pressed her belly a little to see if it felt firm and it did! Sort of like muscles were contracting.
What I might do is put her on a glass sheet, place some tactical greens on it and gently squeeze the belly. This means then I can look underneath without lifting her up to see if any discharge is present, when should I do this, I am on UK time. Should I wait until tomorrow evening or do it now?

Re: Please help!!!
That seems like a good idea, many people do that for sexing hamsters actually (if they are untame) and it works wonders!!
Try to do it when she's awake and fully alert. That way she won't be as spooked by you squeezing her and will most likely tolerate it better

Re: Please help!!!
The glass thing sounds good I think too as then I can get a proper look too. How can I tell if she is on heat or not? Also if discharge does come out how much would it be roughly if she has pyo? Also congrats on your 400th post

Re: Please help!!!
If she is in heat then there may be a small amount of discharge in the cage and she may be a bit more hyper and active than usual.
Unfortunately I have no experience with Pyo so I don't know about the amount of discharge that will come out but I'm sure someone with experience with Pyo will tell you
Thank you haha, you're quite close as well!

Re: Please help!!!
Ok I think then she is in heat now as she seems very active at the moment. Ok do you know of anybody on the forum that has experience with pyo?
Also aiming for 1000 posts by the end of the year!!

Re: Please help!!!
I know Soufflé has had quite a few hamsters with Pyo so I'm sure she'll help when she sees this thread
Good luck with your goal! I might aim for that as well haha

Re: Please help!!!
I wouldn't press her tummy - with a closed pyo the cervix is tightly closed so you may not get discharge anyway and could cause internal damage.
Take the vets advice and keep a very close eye on her for further swelling or sudder weight change or discharge and act on that.
If she is bright and active she sounds OK so try and not fret.

Re: Please help!!!
Right, so no discharge would appear if I test for closed Pyo even if she has it? What signs should I look out for if she is in decline and has closed-pyo? I could also check each day for discharge- how much discharge am I looking for per day if she has open- pyo? Thank you Freyashamsters hope you get 1000 posts too
