Re: Hamster deaths
Thank you Serendipity7000 there all really good suggestion>I really like the detolf habitats cages. Its interesting tanks cost so much because my last tank which is holding cerberus cost very little. I asked a glass merchant if he had any spare glass i could have to build a tank. He said no but he could give it me at cost price. And his apprentices nocked me up a tank around £15. And I had a very old happy male P. murinus. But i am going to do lots of research and see what the best size and place in her room. I do not think she has the room for a detolf(but i do ) So on monday I am going to have a look at some glass\plastic merchants as they can do this work quickly and cheaply. Depending on the disposition of the boss.
hi Cinnamon Bear . Yes i only recently found out they where winter whites due to there color and stripe. I was never aware as a child they did had a life expectancy. They where kept in a huge messy old fish tank with sawdust and toilet roles. Its interesting how tame they actually were.
Although i didn't think they where actually hybrids per say. Id like to own some my self again. Soon. once i have everything set up.
They make better pets than spiders.lol.

Re: Hamster deaths
Ha ha - yes they probably do make better than spiders Great if you can make a glass tank - I have heard of people doing this, if you have the skills - it could save loads of money.
Any winter whites sold by pet shops will be hybrids - it's rare to be able to get an actual winter white except from a breeder. The winter whites and russian campbells are interbred - some come out looking like winter whites, some come out looking like campbells, but they are all hybrids. And I guess they then breed hybrids with hybrids. It can make them more prone to genetic health issues. It's either something to accept and prepare for (prone to diabetes as well) or the other option is to find a breeder where you will get the genetics confirmed.

Re: Hamster deaths
If you're looking for a pure-bred Russian, the only place you're likely to find them is an NHC-registered breeder. Usually, Hybrids are born with a number of health problems and can even have a shorter lifespan

Re: Hamster deaths
You were lucky to have your winter whites or hybrids as they may have been if they were pet shop hams live to 3 years!
Not all hybrids have health problems, there is more potential for that than if you get a pure bred WW or Campbells from a breeder but some can live healthy happy lives without any problems although the usual life span is not often more than about 2 years.
