Re: Sherbet - Health Updates
Vet Check Up - Thursday 26th May
I did post a more detailed update on my other thread All About My Sherbet but I thought I would post a more brief update on this thread as I realised that this is where I should have posted her health update!
Her teeth didn't need to be trimmed but I have to keep an eye on them to prevent them growing too long and take her back to the vets if they do.
Her top teeth look like they might regrow but there a chance they might not depending if there is damage to the roots - if not he suggested extracting her bottom teeth. Would this be necessary? Or would it be best to get them trimmed regularly?
I wanted to get her weighed but the vet didn't - but he said she has put weight back on from the last time he saw her for her operation.

Re: Sherbet - Health Updates
Glad her vet check went well Maybe wait and see what happens with the teeth? ie whether the top ones regrow or not. I can see the logic in extracting bottom teeth if there are no top ones - the bottom ones could stick into the top gums when trying to eat - but I don't know if it's a good idea or not - maybe someone else would.

Ok and Thanks for your advice. I'm hoping that her top teeth will regrow. I'm just thinking that it might be too stressful for a 2 year old hamster to have another operation (especially considering how she was after her last, she was really stressed). That's was why I was thinking it would be best to just keep trimming the bottom ones so that it keeps them short enough so that they won't dig into her top gums or whether this wouldn't work? Only as she adapted really well using just her bottom teeth to scoop her food up and if she didn't have any teeth would she struggle to eat on her own?
I have to wait and see what happens but I don't like the idea of removing her bottom teeth, so I'm hoping that the top one will regrow.

Re: Sherbet - Health Updates
Extracting the teeth & getting all the root out in one piece can be quite a tricky operation so if it was me I would most likely opt for trimming if the top teeth don't regrow, trimming isn't usually that stressful for them & is a lot less risky.
They can eat just fine without the front teeth, they use their back teeth to grind food so if she did have to have them removed she would still be ok to eat normal food.
Fingers crossed the top teeth regrow which would make everything less of a worry!

Thank You Cypher. When the vet mentioned extracting her bottom teeth I was shocked especially as how well she has adapted to using just her bottom and her back teeth. I'm hoping they will regrow so it would be less to worry about all I want her to be happy and confortable so that why I just considering all the other possibilities before so I don't have to make a decision without researching other options, I'm thinking it would be best to get them trimmed regularly and see whether this works first before making the other decision. Next time I go to the vets I will try to see the vet is saw last time as she was so helpful and informative so I would like to get her opinion to, as she own small animals herself.
My fingers are crossed so tight that they will regrow as one looks like it is but the other I can't see (as he did even say if they both dont regrow he would also consider extracting her teeth!)

Re: Sherbet - Health Updates
It is so lovely to read about you and Sherbet. I love the way she rested her head in your hand when it was painful for her. How trusting.
I agree with you and Cypher re; teeth.
Hope she continues to go from strength to strength and that her front teeth both grow back!

Re: Sherbet - Health Updates
Thank You Flowerfairy, The bond I have with Sherbet is so special and she mean everything to me. I think she rested her head in my hand as she thought I could take away her pain but I gently stroked her which allowed her to relax knowing she was safe.
She keeps getting better which I'm really happy about just wish her teeth would go back to normal especially after everything she been through. Thanks for you input regarding her teeth that's the way I'm inclined to go just to have them trimmed. Just wanted to make sure that I was definitely going to make the right decision if it comes to that which I'm hoping it won't, as I want the top teeth to regrow.
