Hi, thank you for all your help. Returned to the vets today and saw somebody else, she said it looked like closed pyometra which can be solved with a hysterectomy, unfortunately I'm not working and have two children under 3, I just couldn't validate the cost, think we'll steer clear of pets for a while, my eldest is quite upset and I feel very guilty that we couldn't afford to save her.

I'm sorry to hear that. If her condition was quite bad though even the op may not have saved her so try and not blame yourself. No decision made from love is ever wrong and giving her rest before she suffered was the best decision for you.
I would always recommend a male hamster for a young family simply because of the fact that this is not uncommon in females and it causes so much upset to lose a young much loved hamster.

I'm sorry to hear about your girl. What an upsetting situation for you and your family.

Hysterectomy is costly and surgery is risky in small animals like hammies. Pyometra is not a nice thing for a hamster to suffer in the later stages, so I'm glad you gave your girl peace to save her from that.

Run free, Merida x

Sorry for your loss. Please don't feel guilty you made the best decision for everyone and you did it responsibly-- er I can't think of the right word-- I am so very impressed with your caring to take your sick hammie to the vet, 2 times, and try to treat her, even though it was obviously a great strain on your finances, well I just wanted to say I think you deserve acknowledgement for being a really wonderful human for that; I'm sure you're a great Mum and what a good example for your children. We see stories here of terrible abuse of hamsters by thoughtless and even cruel people who are also mothers and we wonder what their children are learning. I also think it is a responsible and caring decision to stay away from pets you cannot afford to treat to the best care possible, and once again not something always done. Having said that, I think you are the kind of family that should have pets, and I hope that maybe you and your children can start saving for a rainy day vet fund so in time you might be able to welcome another furry family member. Believe me when I say I understand how difficult the loss of a furry friend can be, but I do think it is worth the friendship. You may be still grieving and I apologise if I say that too soon. Sorry for going on, bless and I hope you keep well. x
