Default Should you take your Ham to the vet for a check?

Hi All

Got my ham from Pets at Home. She is still very skittish but we are making slow progress. I was just wondering if it's good practice to take them to the vet for an overall health check?

Thanks!

I don't think is necessary and it would cause stress. You can do it at home, but I wouldn't recommend doing it just yet because she's a new hamster.

I actually like to take my small animals to the vet for a check every now and then and try and make it as enjoyable for them as possible. I think that way if they get poorly later in life the extra stress of having to go to the vet is less because the smells and experience will be more familiar to them.

Everyone has different opinions but I did this with all my rats and hamsters and they never seemed too bothered at the vets.

Personally I wouldn't, just leave her to settle in without any additional stress that shouldn't be needed.
Do learn to do home health checks though, there is a thread on that in the health section if you're not sure about anything.

Sometimes pet stores give out certificates for a free vet exam when you adopt an animal from their store or from the SPCA. I chose to take my Chinese to the vet as she was older and had some fur thinning. I waited until the very last day (had 10 days) and then it turned out that she was indeed in good health but she needed a nail trimming. So in my case it was a good thing to take her to the vet.

I'd say anytime I rescue an older animal I'd take it to the vet, especially if it's free as they may have mites or other health issues.
