Teeth Issues
Hi,
I have a large male syrian - around 1 year old.
He has recently started chewing constantly, wood, metal, anything he can.
I don't know why his behaviour has changed recently and one of his teeth has broken but they don't look too long.
However, last night I caught him chewing so much his mouth was bleeding. Has anyone experienced something like this before? Really looking for some help as its very distressing to see your hamster hurting himself
Thank you!

Re: Teeth Issues
Has anything else changed that might have upset him & caused him to get stressed as that can start them chewing. Any changes in cage, general environment, food or anything else you can think of?
If not he may have a problem with his teeth or mouth that's making him chew, if one tooth is broken it might well be worth getting your vet to give his teeth & mouth in general a good check over to see what's going on & if anything may need clipping.

Re: Teeth Issues
I was thinking the same as Cypher. Either something has stressed him to cause the behaviour change, or he has pain somewhere. Any kind of change of environment can really stress them - like moving the cage to a new room, or doing a big clean of everything all at the same time, or even using new cleaning products - but if this is the first time it's happened it's not likely to be cleaning issues.

Re: Teeth Issues
If he`s snapped or broken a tooth and there is blood appearing, it may be a good idea to ask a vet to check his tooth isn`t slack and the blood is coming from his gum. I would also get him into a tank-style cage like a Zoozone 2 to prevent any bar chewing or chewing anything plastic or that`s detrimental to his mouth.
Check that he can nibble and chew food because you may need to break up any large pieces like extruded biscuits or buy a bag of Supreme Science Selective for him as these can be easily broken up and even wetted to soften them. Being a complete food, it would help maintain his weight if he ever has problems eating.

Re: Teeth Issues
Hello RH! I was just wondering how you were doing. Haven't seen you around much recently. Hope you are ok. Sorry for going off topic there - I hope your hammy is ok.
