It's probably just that she's used to using one type of wheel or finds it easier. As long as it's the right size and causes no arching of any type it's perfectly fine!

I had the wheel first. Then bought the saucer. She stopped using the wheel after that. I don't know if the wheel was to small and she didn't like it. I think it was 4.5 inches.

Well yeah,a 4.5 inch wheel would be far too small for anything but a robo and even then robos would be more comfortable with a wheel considerably larger.A hamster generally won't use a wheel if it's obviously way too small, but if you try a large wheel it might change things.

What size is best for dwarf hams? I had bought her a cool wheel and she could not push it. I felt so bad watching her try lol

You could try 8 inches - if your wheel is a silent spinner the new ones don't spin very well.

Your question about how long you should let your hamster out is really interesting. Maddy is out as long as she is reasonably active. When I let her play in the lounge with us (it's barricaded and completely hamster safe), I bring in lots of her toys and let her explore. When she gets tired, she goes to sleep in the same place she has done since she was just a little pup. If she sleeps for longer than ten mins I put her back in her cage. When she's out and about I also bring in her food and some water.

Whilst Maddy will come and say hello to me she is largely independent. I sit on the floor with her and give her some hugs but she doesn't stand it for long and she has always preferred mooching around on her own. I wouldn't take it personally if yours is like that too. When your little one grows in confidence you'll find that you'll have more interaction good luck
