Does any one else's hammy have these raw spots?
The very first day I got my hammy he had a raw spot on his side, then sometimes when he wakes up from sleeping the spot is all wet and looks even redder from him chewing and knawing it. Why does he do this? And what can i do to help him?

Those look like normal scent glands to me.
They do sometimes look a bit wet when they wake or when they've been scent marking things.
Are you sure he's chewing them & not just doing normal grooming?

As Cypher says! Those are his scent glands. They do a lot of grooming - licking (washing) and nibbling at themselves. They are very clean little things

Re: Does any one else's hammy have these raw spots?
They are scent glands and they do look normal to me. Do you have any other hamsters especially females? If they smell others they can scent more to let them know they are there. The fur gets quite wet and greasy to spread the scent. Another thing that makes them scent is over cleaning of the cage. They don't like too much cleaning and it does stress them when they lose their smell around them. They overcompensate by rubbing around and licking the scent then rubbing it over things. Keep it to a minimum and only do spot cleans in wet corner. Poops are dry and harmless. Don't do full cage cleans and always replace some of the scented bedding back in the cage to try and help them settle after a clean.

I didn't know that! But I did find this cleaning tips video from Erin's Hamsters very helpful - it explains how to do a cage clean without stressing your hamster or removing all his natural scent. It is worth watching - it really helped me have a better cage cleaning routine (and also saves on substrate - you need deep enough substrate as well).

Re: Does any one else's hammy have these raw spots?
Hi, yes they definitely look the same as our Rollin's (male Syrian) scent glands. Quick q for those that have replied, in the pics they look quite central, almost middle of his body? I thought scent glands are usually on the right & left side, sort of between the tummy & leg area? Are scent glands in other places?
Maybe it's just the angle of the pic?

Yes thats what I'm confused about, it is in the center I would say. That's why I'm so concerned

Re: Does any one else's hammy have these raw spots?
Is it around the same place as the ones in these pics?
Syrian Scent Glands
Souffle's pics show the scent glands being higher up than our Rollin has. But Rollin is a smaller male (140g) so perhaps the location can vary slightly depending on ham size, age etc? Might need input from more experienced HC folk on this..
