Raw spots on his sides ??
Sometimes when my hammy wakes up he will have 1 or 2 wet spots on his sides from him chewing and they will be raw and red and then it'll grow a scab. Sometimes he gives them a chance to heal but then he'll just start knawing on his side again. Why is he doing that? And what can I do to help him? I can post pics later when he wakes up if I need too

Re: Raw spots on his sides ??
Can you post pics? If he is a Syrian it could be his scent glands on his hips. They tend to get more raised and darkly pigmented as they get older in dark eyed hamsters and this can look like a scab.
There are some pics here for you to compare

Re: Raw spots on his sides ??
It kind of looks like it, but I know his are raw skin, they are much redder than that and wet from him chewing and knawing at it plus I don't think it's on his hip, more on his side. I'll post pics as soon as I get out of class. But thanks for that I didn't even know Syrians had scent glands like that

Do you think his sides could be rubbing in his wheel? What wheel is he in? Our Syrian is very large and I got a deeper wheel for him.

Re: Raw spots on his sides ??
Poor you that sounds nasty. Is he weeing in his bed and lying on it? Could be urine burns. When willow had to cope with changes she rubbed her scent glands too much and one of them became sore and for a few days smelt bad, I think she had a little infection but it cleared up on its own but it looked a bit raw as she had fine fur anyway (she was a satin) and as she fiddled with it because it was sore she rubbed her fur off it. Yours sounds a bit worse than hers though. Good idea with the wheel serendipity

Re: Raw spots on his sides ??
Well iv tried 3 different kinds of wheels and that never changed it. The very first day I got him he had the spot so he had been doing this before I got him. I have very thick bedding for him so I don't think he lays on his pee.. but anyways here it is he hasn't been chewing on it because it's not wet. But most of the time when he comes out from sleeping its all wet from him knawing on it
