Turn for the worst
Grim news, Rose, who has been fighting what turned out to be a hookworm for the last 2 weeks has gone downhill fast. From what the vet told me and what information I could find online hookworms are pretty unheard of in hamsters (She had to call around to make absolutely sure) She said more than likely the worm came from the pet store/breeder and she is only showing symptoms now because the thing is fully grown, and Hookworms themselves are absolutely deadly, in humans, in hamsters, well it's shocking she survived as long as she did. The worm causes all kinds of symptoms ranging from pneumonia like symptoms, to cold feeling and slowness. (Which is why neither I nor the vet had any idea what was wrong until she studied a poop sample) She got medication for it and at first it seemed to be working well but as I learned from google, you can go downhill fast with hookworms and all her symptoms are back, and worse than ever before.
She wont eat, she wont drink anything, she can barely move, and now in addition to heavy breathing there is a rather loud clicking sound in her lungs along with it. I can't stand to see her like this and it seems like nothing I do can save her. It has been a long fight but I think it may be time to stop fighting it :'(

Re: Turn for the worst
I am sorry to hear about her, but it is time to let go. Hookworms are more painful than you can imagine. Having her humanely put to sleep is the greatest kindness you can show her.

Oh my god i'm so sorry to hear about this it makes me so sad!
I know nothing about hookworms but if they are as described and her condition has declined so fast then i agree with SM_banks.
What a shame. Poor baby girl.

Re: Turn for the worst
I am so sorry to hear this. Poor Rose, how dreadful and poor you for for going through this too. Only you can make the decision for Rose. As soufflé says: any decision made out of love is the right decision. Whether that is keeping them comfy or helping them on their way so they can be sooner be at peace. It sounds like you've already come to a decision and I think it's what I would do in the circumstances. Your vet sounds kind and considerate and that will give you comfort that Rose will be in good hands when she need it x

Re: Turn for the worst
She literally declined from a playful state to near death in a day, at this point she has completely stopped moving and laid on her side :'( no vet anywhere near here has any openings so I can either leave her like that or, well put her to sleep myself.

Oh my god!!!
I wouldn't put her to sleep myself couldn't do it, i'd hold her as long as is needed, until the vet opens at a minimum if she survives that long, syringe her some water or give her treats if she'll take them, stay off work if necessary. At least if she goes in your hands she won't die alone! Hold her for her last moments! Please!
My thoughts are with you and your little one!
Now get off this site and go and hold on to her so she knows she won't die alone.
I wasn't there to hold my girl when she passed and i have immense regret for it. She'll want to be with you when she goes! Don't take any chances just leaving her on her side please.

Re: Turn for the worst
Rose has official passed, we held on as long as we could but... I could see it in her eyes, she was in horrible pain, so we said our goodbyes and I went ahead and put her to sleep myself.
I'd been up for the better part of 2 weeks day and night trying everything I could find hoping she would recover, I never even properly introduced her and now she's gone.
it's so quiet... I can already feel depression sinking in
