Default Closed Pyometra?

Hey, Our four month old hamster, Panda, has a really swollen abdomen and after constant research, two vet examinations and some prescription lactulose and liquid paraffin with little improvement, we believe it may be Closed Pyometra.
I am wondering if anyone knows the estimated cost to have this surgically fixed (i.e. spayed). She is also looking a bit ragged around her neck and under her tail as though she is neglecting her usual grooming. She is also not running in her wheel like she used to and is asleep for most of the night. We are really worried and would like to get her seen asap.

Cheers, R and C.

Poor baby! I think your best bet would be to call vets to get price quotes, as they can be so drastically different between locations.

I'm sorry to hear that Panda is unwell. I'm not sure what it would cost for her surgery but my vets removed a large abdominal tumour from my Syrian for £112 including post op check, medications, etc. They should be able to give you an estimate as Jenibelle has said. I would maybe book an appointment as if to go ahead for surgery so you don't have to pay a consultation fee and they will tell you the cost, etc. I wish you the very best xx

Thank you for your lovely replies and advice! We will call a vet tomorrow and try to get her seen and sorted. In Panda's last re-examination we were quoted £168 for surgery and post op painkillers, and she wasn't even diagnosed with anything. It seemed to be a 'just to see what it could be' surgery quote. We don't know if it's Pyometra, but her symptoms and our research point to it. Will update when we get progress.

Cheers, C.

Panda update: we got a prompt appointment with another vet today and she gave Panda an ultrasound scan which revealed an enlarged inflamed liver, so not pyometra at all. Panda was given a steroid injection and a dose of antibiotics which we have to give her daily for the coming week. The vet was very thorough and wants to see Panda again next week for a follow-up. All in all it cost us £40, a vast difference to the 168 another vet quoted us for undiagnosed surgery which would have been fruitless for her. Hoping she'll respond well and be back on track soon. 4 months is too young.

Hi all, Panda passed away today. It seems her liver condition was too much for the antibiotics. We woke up to find her very still and unresponsive on the floor of her home though she was still breathing. A few hours later we found she had passed away in her nest. We have buried her with her nest and are going to plant some black and white flowers over her. Thank you for all your comments, R and C.
