Default Think my Russian dwarf dying.

Hi. I'm new to this forum. I just need some advice. My Russian dwarf is nearly 18 months old. She was a very active hamster. In Last 36 hours she stopped using her wheel. I went to clean her out today and she was very still snuggled in her bed. Normally she'd come to greet me if I open her cage. She's really cold to touch. And just heavily sleeping. I put her in my hand and jumper to try and warm her. But didn't work. Her normally pink ears are very pale. She's not keen on being touched. And hasn't opened her eyes. She looks very peaceful and quiet. So have just placed her in her bedding. And put her favourite treat of cucumber near her. As she's not drinking I thought if she was thirsty she may take a little. Is this what they call the twilight. I don't want her to suffer. But as I said she looks peaceful. Is not squeaking or making any noises to indicate pain. It's late here now. I wonder if it will be long before she quietly passes. I'm so worried and upset. I've had hamsters all my life. But she was so special. She would even kiss if you put face close to her. Would always chatter in my ear. Sorry if I've gone on a bit. Just never experienced this in all the years of keeping hamsters.

Terri,

Sorry I can't offer you any advice, though I think what you've done is just right.
I'd talk to her gently reminding her of your good times together, but I think she may
be ready to go.
Take care of you both and do come back with news when you're able.
Thinking of you both tonight.

Hi terri. It does sound as though she`s best left in a cosy place to sleep or to pass if that`s what`s happening. Is her body cold? There is always a chance she`s fell into a stupor and hasn`t been able to generate her body heat. Let her stay in her nest where she`s familiar and let us know if she`s okay or if she`s passed on. I`m so sorry, we all go through this loss and we are here for you. x

Thankyou for replying. She survived the night. But she was agitated. I decided to call the vet and an hour ago she was put to sleep. She wasn't aware of anything and was very peaceful. The vets were so kind and said she was a good age. Feeling bit lost. But I know we gave her a great home. With lots of cuddles and kisses. Now I just have to tell my kids when they get home from school. That will be even harder. Ty again for the support x x x

Thankyou for your reply. She was sadly put to sleep an hour ago as she became agitated this morning. I never even expected her to get through the night... but couldn't let her suffer. I'm just cleaning her cage out and feeling pretty upset. But I know she had a lovely life with us. Full of cuddles and love. I've placed her in a lovely little box with bedding. When my kids come home they'll say goodbye to her. She will then be laid to rest next to her sister in my woodland garden at home. They may be small. But every time I lose one it feels like my heart breaking. After all they're our family aren't they x x x ty again x x 😙

I'm really sorry for your loss, you did your very best for her right up to the end & helped her go peacefully without any prolonged suffering & sometimes that is all we can do for them.
I'm sure her life with you was happy & full of love but it is very sad when their time with us is cut short so suddenly.

Teri, so sorry for you and the children.
You're absolutely right for how small they are
they take a huge chunk of our hearts when they
go.
So glad though that it was a peaceful passing and she
had a life filled with love.
Take care of yourself through this as well as the kids.
Still thinking of you, she is no doubt having a riot with
her sister.
