If she is healthy then she should be fine. 3 years for a hamster is great. Moving can be stressful for them but if you keep the noise and movements minimal then she should be fine. We did a big moved and all of our hamsters settled in fine. They stayed with family until we were all sorted.

What sort of hamster is she? Is it because you feel she is too much for you to look after? 3 is quite old but personally I wouldn't have her put down before she is ready to die. Are you moving house too or just moving the hamster to a new home? I wasn't sure from your post. It is true that moving is stressful for a hamster and it is much more stressful if you are not going with them as they look to you for their security. But if there is no other way round it, if she is in good health and still active I think it would be better to rehome her than have her put down as she has a chance of life. She may settle ok and have a bit more of her life to enjoy. Tell us more details as there are things you can do to help her settle if you have to move her

I agree about not having her put down - it is a great age as the others say, and I don't think it would be a good thing to have a well hamster put down. Rehoming would be better. She is probably already sensing that things have changed, if you're not well enough to look after her. I hope you are doing ok and that things will improve for you. All you need now is a nice person to give her a home for the remainder of her days so she can live out her old age happily. Maybe email around a few friends? It's surprising what offers you can get. If no joy there then check if there's a hamster rescue nearby you.

I think the main thing, if she moves to someone else, is keep her in the same cage and don't clean it out just before she goes (maybe a week before she goes). So something is familiar for her at first.

You should be happy she has lived such a long life with you and not take it for granted and decide it's time for her to die because she is now an inconvenience. Please don't put her down, you'll probably feel guilty for not rehoming her. Like the others have said there will be somebody else willing to look after her if you try hard enough. Hamsters aren't to be "replaced", like they are objects. They are living animals and we shouldn't decide when it's their time to die unless there is serious health problems where they are only suffering. This might seem a little rough but please follow through on your commitment to take care of your hamster the day you adopted her that should have been your commitment to see her through to the end, however that looks like, to the best of your ability. but definitely not by taking her life.

If you live in the US you possibly ask Pet Smart & Pet-Co who they use as their rescue agency? Usually there are charity agencies that operate on donations & take real good care of the animals if they need medical treatment or need rehoming. Sometimes these chain stores have to surrender animals that do not sell for whatever reason?

Do you have a close family member who may take over any care duties of the hamster without being too hands-on? How does your health affect you in respect of spot cleaning and replacing water and food? Or are you worried that you may have to medicate her at some point and you don`t have the energy to cope with that? Albeit, that may not ever happen anyway, but given her age now, chances are she will be happy enough sleeping and doing her thing. If you can manage the basics, I would think about keeping her for what time she has left unless you can`t actually do physical tasks. x

Hello and thank you all so much for the good answers.
I`m not going to put her down. A girl who is a breeder told me that it might would be better to put her down, but I feel that is wrong. She is healthy and I do love her very much.
The issue I`m having is that I got asthma ol and we did have two hamsters in the beginning of this year, but after the youngest move, I did get a little better.

I am a member of an another hamster site, and I did get yeld on at the other girl who ment that our little hamster girl could get health issues from moving. It scares me to ask someone there to ask if they got heart for an another one. I have talked to a vet who said that as a long as she is healthy, she would be fine to move to an another home.

As things is now, she is not getting so much out of the cage as she should be, and I feel that she deserves more than just being in the cage.

I might take her to the vet and check her health and if the vet sais that she is ok, I would reconsider to find a new home for her. But it is so damn hard if I have to let her go.

It is NOT my word to put her down. It`s a reason why a ask here. To put a healthy hamster or other animals down, is not ok with me either. As I said, to put her down, was an idea from a breeder. She thinks that to put the hamster down is more human than to move here to an another home.

And as responsibility, my head is thinking 24/7 of how I`m going to solve this, but if my asthma og lignende is getting worse, I need to find a solution. But isn`t responsibility to give the hamster the best life I can give?

Justme, where are you located? Are you in the UK or elsewhere? I`m sure someone would be happy to take your little girl in given your current circumstances. And no, nobody here will judge you so don`t worry at all about that, okay? Older hamsters don`t need much expect a nice, peaceful home where they can retire to, so anyone taking on your hamster should be able to provide that care. She sounds lovely and still enjoying life and that`s the main thing. Tell us where you are in the world and we can go from there to try and help. x

Just noticed you are in Norway, is that right? If it is, I`m not sure how many Norwegian members we have actually. Such a shame because if you were in the UK you may have found someone to help. x
