Forgot to say that she has not been our hamster in 3 years. We did get her from someone who had to give her away because of the dog. They gave me the contract the animal store gave them when they bought her, and it says that she was bought in august 2014.

Try to ensure the litter is dust extracted or dust free.

I wouldn't use Hugro - it is hemp (plant based) and set my asthma off. Carefresh should be ok, but it can be dusty and that can affect asthma. I use paper based bedding now. Oxbow make a paper based bedding now as well that is very similar. I don't know what options you have in your country.

Zooplus mainly have wood shavings and hemp, both of which could cause allergy, but they do have this Petlife paper bedding/substrate (made from tea bag paper) which sounds similar to the stuff we have in the Uk

Petlife Safebed Shredded Paper | Free P&P £29+ at zooplus!

I wouldn't put your hamster in anything smaller than the Samla Bin and a cage change is quite a bit thing. It shouldn't be too heavy or difficult to manage.

This is a bit off topic but I wanted, for many years, to find a way to come off my inhalers for asthma and decided to do research and see if homeopathy had any solutions. I did find this homeopathic herbal product, sold exclusively by Alfred Vogel and had contact with people who said how much it worked. In the US it is sold for asthma - in the Uk it can only be labelled for 'hayfever' due to licensing laws.

Anyway - the theory was, if you use it for about 3 months your asthma improves. After two weeks I was so improved I went without all my inhalers - something I haven't done since childhood. BUT - I wouldn't recommend stopping inhalers. Because I was fine for about 9 months until my Dad had a massive heart attack and was in Intensive Care, and the stress of chasing about to see him and the worry, brought on my asthma very suddenly. So I started using the inhalers again in a much lower dose just to avoid such emergency situations.

It is worth a try. It probably won't cure it completely, but if you are better in many ways and have less sensitivies, it can make life much more bearable. It's perfectly safe as the herbs are in homeopathic doses (a Doctor would say there's nothing in it!)

I did keep taking it for 3 months, despite having major relief after two weeks, just to finish the recommended course. Some people say it has cured them. I prefer to still stick with conventional preventative medicine as a fallback/ belt and braces, in case something triggers an attack one day.

Pollinosan Luffa Hayfever Relief Tablets

It is for asthma but only allowed to be advertised as being for hayfever.

But is petlife safebed better than carefresh? I hope it is, because I think carefresh smells burned or something like that

But one thing there makes my asthma worse it strong smells. Perfume, hamster pee ol.

A little bit off topic but have any of you tried this?

I used to take the wet litter out of the litter tray each day and add a little fresh litter. That helped reduce the smell.

I didn't wash the litter tray as often as when I did it caused one of my hamsters to stop using it.

Toilet litter is better than it used to be at controlling smells. I haven't yet got my latest hamster so someone else may know which litter is best.

care fresh is £6 for 20L at Pets At Home, but it could be cheaper on the Internet.

I get my pet parrot food in 20kg bags and it saves a lot. The place I get my bird food has others pet food/bedding etc so I will probably get my hamster food their too.

I have a paper shredding machine so can shred paper and card as hamster bedding.

It`s a little comic. The animal store here has two choises I think of litter. It is carefresh 50L I believe, in USD the price is 34,27.
The comic part is that when I need to buy litter and food at the same time, I need to go to two different stores or buy it on the net. I have never used zooplus, but I think I need to try them.

But are petlife safebed the best of the best?

Hi again. Those bottles and stands have a safety issue someone told me recently . If you can find a Ferplast drinky 75ml bottle they are good - you can stick them to the side of the cage with velcro maybe. Or if you want to have a bottle stand, some people make them out of an old plastic bottle or something similar with the top cut off and a hole in the side. You can buy bottle stands but they can be a bit expensive. Can you order from Germany? Rodipet in Germany do very good hamster stuff and they have a good bottle stand that comes with a classic mouse sized bottle.

Substrate: I'd avoid any wood based ones like aspen and pine shavings, mainly because they are common ones to be allergic to and tend to be dusty. The paper bedding will be much less dusty than Carefresh as Carefresh isn't paper, it's some kind of processed wood pulp.

If you can order from Amazon uk then "Fitch" paper bedding is what I use and a lot of other people use on here. And I find it dust-free and certainly doesn't cause allergies - and it doesn't smell of anything. It sounds like paper or cardboard bedding will be best for you We have some called Finacard as well which is shredded cardboard.

This is the link to the Fitch - it's quite a big bale and I don't know if they'd post to you. It's not that heavy and can be stored fairly easily indoors as you can squish it into different shapes to fit under things or in a wardrbobe eg

Fitch Paper Pet Bedding for Small Animals (10kg): Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

I'm sure the petlife one will be similar but I haven't tried it so not sure how soft it is. The Fitch is nice and soft.

It's lovely that you took on this little hammy. Keep coming on here - it's very friendly and there are people with all kinds of experience, and breeders and lots of good ideas!

As for hamster pee - using a potty litter tray helps as then there is less cleaning to do and you empty the potty every 4 or 5 days. Our hamster started using his straight away and the rest of the cage stays dry, so less big cage cleans to do - I only end up doing a full cage clean about every 3 months now, and even then it's a partial cage clean.

I have this one, which fits in their pee corner, but any dish will do. Chinchilla bathing sand is good to put in it and helps stop odour.

Hamster Potty corner Litter Tray for Mice Hamster Gerbil Cage House. Size: 16 × 7 × 12/12 cm: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

Ours likes to sit in it and have a little wash in the front half and pees in the back corner

Supreme Petfoods Science Bathing Sand 1.5 Litre: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

Sorry - just seen you have a toilet already! You could try sand in it. Needs to be Chinchilla sand though and not 'dust'.

Shavings is pine wood (sometimes called sawdust).
