Hi Justme89. I think it's good you've had the courage to ask on this forum to get advice about your situation. Especially given the responses you've had elsewhere, which don't sound very helpful or informative.

I agree with what others have said, esp. racinghamster who is clearly trying to come up with practical solutions. & as you said yourself, there is no way you should consider putting your hamster down if there is no health reason, by that I mean the hamster's health. Having said that, if your own health is at risk with the move then you do need to think about yourself. There's no point you getting ill while trying to do the best for your hamster. Since your hamster relies on you for her wellbeing. So it is a difficult situation.

From my experience, moving house with a hamster should be fine. We moved 300miles with 6 hamsters, I don't think they really knew what was happening other than being put in travel carriers/small cages for the journey & getting a lot more attention thru' the move! The most important thing for the move is that your hamster is kept warm and secure and obviously fed & watered. The other important thing is that they need familiarity to settle in well. That means trying to keep as much as you can the same for them, like their cage set up, food, routines & having their familiar smells around them. & like herbi7 said, hammies will feel comforted knowing you are there. So I wouldn't worry about the move itself being stressful for your hamster, if you can do all those things. In fact, as she's older, she could actually be more laid back than a young hamster who might find it a lot more scary.

If you can't take you hammy with you, I really hope you find someone to look after her. I'm not sure you should make your decision based on whether the vet says she is healthy or not. I think you should decide depending on whether you can look after her or whether your health means you can't take care of her anymore. You seem a responsible caring owner & that's why you came here for advice. I'm sure you will make the right choices. Either way, don't be afraid of asking people on this forum, they are always helpful and want the best for you & your hamster. x

If you change the substrate that may help minimise symptoms. Erin's YouTube channel has a video about having a hamster if you have Asthma.

Thank you so much for a long and good answer coldpaws.
I`m not moving, but I`m thinking off relocate my little girl because of my health situation. As you say, my hamster is relies on my wellbeing.

About the vet thing. That was also the idea from the breeder.

My nr 1 is my hammys health and that I can give her what she needs. I`m not sure that it is an point to have her, if she dont get what a hammy needs. She has a good cage, and gets food and water, but to have an animal is so much more than that I think.

It is so hard to set my feelings to the side and think of her in someone elses home But to take care of her, I need the energy. But do you think it is animal abuse to replace her?

Yes, I`m in Norway. I`m a little bit afraid of asking someone at the other hamster side because of the reactions, it is unfortunate because it might be someone dere who could fit for her.

Hi Justme89, you're very welcome & I'm sorry you're in a difficult situation. I must have misread the thing about moving house, thanks for clarifying.

If I understand correctly, you're not able to take care of your hammy, for whatever health reasons. You clearly care about her, yes, looking after any animal is much more than food and water. In which case, you do have to put your feelings aside & find someone who can look after her. I think someone has suggested is there anyone in your family/house who can help take care of her? Perhaps you could share things like cleaning out her cage, playtime, feeding etc? If that's not an option, are there rescue centres in your area that could take her in? Perhaps the vet might know somewhere?

I know it's hard to think of her being looked after by someone else but if she will have a better life then you know it's for the best. You also have your health to think about. You've looked after her well, for her to live to a good age so don't feel any guilt. I don't think it's animal abuse to give up an animal if you know you can't care for it properly. I'd say it's the other way round! People who keep animals but don't look after them should give them up!

They think it is better to put her down because a young hamster takes it better to move.

We do have spca and stuff like that, but I`m not sure if they would help me out.

I know, and at the good side I got support in you guys in here

Hi again. I know what it is like to have to give up a pet because of asthma - I had to give away a dog once for that reason and it was heart-wrenching.

All I am thinking is - I don't know how badly you are affected at the moment, but you've had her 3 years and hamsters don't live much longer than that. It's fairly exceptional for them to live much longer. Do you think it is something you could manage a bit longer, or has your asthma worsened recently (sorry, I know that's personal).

I also agree that the bedding can be part of it. Many people are allergic to the pine shavings. I am allergic to most pets, but not hamsters However hemp bedding and pine shavings set me off! What substrate do you use?

Hi,

I noticed that you're concerned at her being in her cage a lot of the time, is it a big one?
Could someone add extra toys for you or put her in a hamster ball?
I'm so sorry you had a bad time on another site, I understand ~ I have recently been diagnosed with a form of dementia and was told I should let my pets go. Yesterday I got a hamster :~)
It is hard when you are ill to take care of your furries. Sadly again I truly know, I am the only human here and I'm severely disabled with many health issues including asthma. I have worried I'm not the best Mum my furry family could have, but I am Mum and unless there are clear signs that my people are suffering I'm staying Mum to them.
It is desperately hard though, if you want you can private message and I'll give you what support I can.
Take care

Hello
She has a SAMLA from ikea. As litter I use carefresh (?). But its empty now so I would try to change and use something else. I got an tips of using hugro hemp bedding from zooplus. Can you recommend some litter from zooplus?

When it comes to cage size, I believe it is huge different there are recommended. Here in Norway we have the Norwegian hamster union, and one example of size from their page to syrian hamster are 50*30 whit and minimum hight at 40 cm. If the syrian lives in a aquarium the size are 70*36*38.
When it comes to breeders, the size at cage for dwarf is from 50*35 I think.

Yesterday I started to think about my hammys activity, and it would might help to have a little bit smaller cage. I need to find out if I react on the litter, and the way I can solwe that on, is to use first price toilet paper as litter for a couple weeks. But I think it also might would help me to have an smaller cage then. I dont know if it comes of that she was used to being taken out of the cage more in the day, but now she isn`t so activ anymore in the day, just at night. That made me think of a smaller cage.

Thank you all so much for being kind, instead of yelling at me, it helps me so much more.

I've had a quick scroll through this thread again. I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling with asthma. We are all here to support you. I hope you can find a solution as I see you don't want to give her away. I must say, 3 years is great for a hamster! If you struggle to clean her out, have you tried wearing a dust mask? I have asthma also but it isn't too bad. I use dust masks when I clean the house x
