I'd maybe just tell your son he passed during the night? He will accept it as children do and grieve but then he will bounce back to his joy in life as the young do. Let him help with the funeral and make his own tribute.
It is nobody's fault and least of all yours Tinky. It is just one of those things that we would never wish to happen ever but does. I guess it's a bit like a cot death.

I am so sorry. It is nothing you have done that has caused him to pass so young. It's just very sad. As Souffle said he was probably born with a congenital condition that caused him to be unable to grow up and to pass young. I don't think it matters that you have been cuddling him all day It's hard to know exactly when he passed and he would feel the love, maybe even after he had passed xxxxxx

thank you, it helps to think that way, I worked it out that Shadow would have been 7 yrs old in human years, I have lost my baby boy... im gutted, I have lost many hamsters over my 21yrs of hamster care, but all were at least 2yrs old, Shadow has really taught me something... He will NEVER beforgotten xx

I would have been heart broken too with a pet so young. I remember the huge love and bonding when you first get them. I don't know what to say, except - it's time and you will do your grieving for the little one. But he is now pain free and playing free over the rainbow and he was loved before he left xxx

Shadow you were loved, Shadow you were blessed,
you were a lasting reminder to those that were left,
Life is short and fleeting,Life it is a gift,
you will live on forever in the hearts of who you miss,

You touched our lives so fleeting,
You made an impact true,
and even if you were so small,
We will remember you xx

They certainly can. I felt like I had a new baby when we got Charlie! And he was supposed to be our little boy's hamster.
