Soda crystals
Im finding as ted gets older hes nearly two his cage seems to be a bit more smelly of wee. Vets says hes ok so i wondered if i could put small tub of soda crystals near cage to absorb smell. Would this be safe as i know they are very sensitive to smell.

Re: Soda crystals
No. Because it won`t work. Spot cleaning his wet areas and just managing his environment is better. Doing full cage cleans doesn`t really help as hamsters like their own scent to be there as their cage is their domain, their own space, so replacing all of the substrate and bedding can make them scent and pee more. So that`s the best way around this. I can`t say it will make any smell go away, but you will always have `some` smell from a cage regardless. x

Re: Soda crystals
I full clean once a week and spot clean on other days but it still seems a bit honking. Why dont the crystals work?

Re: Soda crystals
You can use a sand bath for his toilet area, and then just clean it out when it needs to be done. Full cleaning once a week is too often, and you shouldn't really have to if you have a proper size cage.

Re: Soda crystals
What size is your cage? If it`s something around the size of a Hamster Heaven or an Alaska cage, these cages don`t need weekly emptying, but spot cleaned daily, or just a few times a week. Hamsters can sometimes find an area where they like to `go` for a pee. It can be a favoured corner, inside a tube or a box or anywhere they choose. My Russian dwarf has recently chosen his cardboard Chube tube as his urinal! But even so, I don`t see it a smelly tube, it retains his smell, so he goes back to it daily. Not a bad thing because you can then know where he`s choosing to `go` as the damp patch shows up. My last roborovski chose a toilet roll tube to use as his favoured peeing spot and I only changed the tube if it got really stinky, but kept the tube in the same location inside the cage and he still ran into it for a pee!
Soda crystals I presume are used as a cleaning agent or similar but not something to be located near a small animal. You have no way of knowing whether they omit any aerosols if left too close to the cage. What I sometimes do is, light a scented candle, but place it in the room opposite or in the bathroom and leave the door open. The scent drifts around into the hallway, but isn`t directly near the hamster cage. Doesn`t make the hamster pee any less though!! x

Re: Soda crystals
He could smell bad because you're cleaning so often, you shouldn't do full cleans. Only half the substrate needs to be cleaned out so their scent is retained in their cage. Otherwise they will scent mark a lot, and most likely urinate more to claim their fresh cage as their territory. This could be why it's smelly. I find that spot cleaning the parts where they urinate helps get rid of the smell.
