Re: Arm amputated
I echo not giving up on the wheel so soon, I would at least give it to him as an option. I had a three legged cat who was missing an "arm", but he lived to the ripe old age of 16... Being allowed in and out as he pleased, and was able to get around remarkably well. Having three legs didn't stop him, and one of his were amputated (so it's not like he was just used to have 3 legs from birth either... Animals are just fantastic at adapting!)

Re: Arm amputated
I had a male once years ago who was in a wire cage. Somehow I'm guessing he got one of his front legs caught in the bars (its the only thing I can think of), and had no use of his front leg. We did x-rays and no broken bones so the vet figured nerve damage and he just couldn't feel it. I changed his cage to a 1 level one to make it easier for him. I think I left the wheel in incase he wanted to run on it 3 legged. He had a bit of issues figuring out how to eat with only using the 1 leg but he managed. I don't remember any issues with pouching food...
Hope your little guy does well!

Re: Arm amputated
Attachment 35016Thanks, all for the advice and kind words.xxxx
Chance had his arm amputation surgery yesterday.. Vet called said he did very well threw the surgery, and also, recovering from anesthesia. Although, vet said, there was lots of blood loss.
Chance stayed overnight at the vet clinic.. I received an call today, and was told Chance had passed. :...(. I understood there was high risks of him not making it out of surgery, but had a glimmer of hope he would pull through.
Chance weighed 120 grams the day I took him, and 5 days later, weighted 114grams. Although, he was eating constantly, vet said, she is almost positive the mass on his arm was an cancerous tumor, that was basically draining the life out of him, depleting everything he ate.
I'm having the tumor sent for testing, to find out if it is cancer.
I'm totally gutted, and we tried our very best, but, it was too late.
The photo's are of the days Chance was with me, and all the treats and chews I'd given him, and fresh foods. and his time he walked in an wheel, for over a year, he did not have an wheel to run in.. the wheel on the tiny cage was much too small..
The last few photo's were taken the same day, before I took him to the vet, to have surgery.
It brings peace, and comfort knowing, I held him, and told him, I loved him, gave him a kiss on his head, and held him close to me, and told him, and if he had to say goodbye, I understood, but I'd miss him.. he then, climbed up to my neck, and laid under my hair, and vet took him to have the surgery.
As you can see from the photo's, the tissue mass was very massive in size, and very infected.
Run free, precious boy. no more pain and suffering... You will forever have special place in my heart. x

Re: Arm amputated
I'm really sorry he didn't make it Teddy, you really did everything you could for this little guy to finally give him a chance of a good life, so sad that it was too late for him but I'm sure he knew how much you cared & appreciated all the love at the end of his too short life.
Run free & play well at the bridge forever free of pain little Chance.

Re: Arm amputated
Rip Chance. How sad that you lost him and how wonderful that he had a glimpse of happiness and pampering during his last few days. He looked really beautiful.
I felt ever so tearful when I read that he had passed. Bless him.

Re: Arm amputated
So sad Chance chose to go to the bridge, and known the whole story on him from FB I am so glad you got the chance to let the little guy know love and comforts his last days. Thank-You Teddy for going beyond the call to aid this poor fella. His past owners will answer for what they caused him one day. Run free on four perfectly whole legs Mister Chance. You learned what love was from Teddy, and you had the chance to enjoy a good life for a short but quality time.
Hugs to you Teddy on the loss of such a wonderful little Hamster who didn't get long to see not all humans are cruel and uncaring. You will get a great reward when the time comes for this great act of kindness and love.
