Re: After surgery care
Hi....just seen this thread. Hope all goes well for you and Lexi tomorrow with the surgery.
I know how worried you are, Neptune had surgery last week to remove a tumour, he is 2 in March and so far is recovering very well. We were advised to review this cage and take anything out that he may catch his stitches on. We also took out his wheel and shelves. So for now his cage has Fitch, his nesting bedding which is ripped tissue and 2 tissue boxes so he can use as a hideout\hut along with some wide cardboard tubes.
He was given antibiotics and antiinflammatories.
I would check with your vet re surgery care and please keep us updated. X

Re: After surgery care
I wanted to update you all and let you know that I received a call from the vets and Lexi has made it through her surgery and they are waiting for her to wake up. I can fetch her in an hour or so. I can't thank you all enough for the love and support!
I need to make sure she doesn't chew her stitches now. If anyone has any advice that would be brilliant and will ask the vet too. I did hear something about making a little jacket out of a sock but I'm not sure how safe that is... hopefully she will leave them alone. I will go out and buy a Thank You card for the vets that have helped my little girl.
Much love to all of you! xx

Re: After surgery care
That's really great news, so pleased for both of you
I don't have any experience with stitches but I would imagine better left uncovered while the wound heals but I'm sure the vet will be able to tell you the best way to cope with any potential chewing.

Re: After surgery care
Really happy for your little one buttons, it will be exciting but also worrying for you right now, but she should settle back into her cosy cage again and smell familiarity once she`s back home. Keeping an eye on her periodically and watch for her cleaning or picking at the area if you can. Obviously we can`t watch them 24/7! Dissolving stitches are usually good. One of my adult female mice had these when a tumour was removed and she did have a pick about at the area, but overall, the wound healed fine. I didn`t need to apply anything to it. You vet will give you sound advice on this.
Let us know how she`s doing. x

Re: After surgery care
Thank you all
The vet advised me to keep her in a smaller cage for a few days so she is in our emergency/back up cage. She said no wood shavings and to line it with soft shredded paper and tissue. I did make her a bigger house out of a recycled box as someone suggested and she has plenty of room to stretch out
Antibiotics in her water and she is drinking and eating fine. She is cleaning her sides but she does have a little mess left over from surgery. She hasn't touched her stitches yet, thank goodness.
One thing I did learn today is that when small animals have surgery it can disrupt their digestion so I have to keep a close eye on her toilet habits. Hopefully she will be getting back to normal soon. Even though she has stitches she is happier than when she had her lump and seems to be in much less pain.
Thank you for all the best wishes and will let you know about her recovery!
