Hamster Sore?
Hi everyone
I'm new here and I hope this post is in the right place!
My Syrian Hamster is roughly 18 months old now and I have had no problems with her health. I came home from work today and noticed a round red sore in the middle of her chest area. She doesn't seem to be in any pain and is acting like her normal self. The centre of her sore looks a little yellow/green but I can't see any pus. I'm not sure how she managed to get it and I was wondering if I should clean it some how or let it heal on it's own. My vets are closed until Monday and I was wondering if anyone has any advice?
When my robo hamster was wounded my vet told me to clean his wound with warm salt water but I'm not sure if this is the same situation. Sorry, I'm a little bit worried and clueless about hamster wounds!
Thank you in advance <3

Re: Hamster Sore?
It sounds as though she could possibly have an abscess which would need to be checked out by the vet when you can get there, meanwhile if it does look as though it needs cleaning do as the vet advised you before, there really isn't much more you can do right now I don't think.

Thank you I will call them on Monday and get her seen. She doesn't seem to be in any pain at all. I'll have a look at her wound again later and try and clean it a little.

Re: Hamster Sore?
Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious & will heal easily, let us know how she goes.

Thank you! I will update as soon as I know something. I've been lucky with her health and she is such a sweet little girl. Hopefully all is well

Re: Hamster Sore?
It does sound like a small cyst or abscess if it looks a bit like a human boil! Seems to be filled with something but dare not bursts it! Your right though about the salt water (saline) being safe for open wounds, but the vet should be able to say what it is and take things from there. If in doubt, see the vet even if it`s a `leave it alone` for now case. Lumps can be anything and some can grow large, so better to have it looked at now than allow it to grow or cause further problems for her. Best of luck. x

Thank you I am calling the vets tomorrow and will hopefully have an appointment soon. She had to get her nails clipped 2 months back and I was hoping that would be her first and last visit! Better safe than sorry so to the docs for her we go

Re: Hamster Sore?
If your worried it`s always best to get a wee check up just to clarify. If she needs a nail trim again you could always get that done at the same time save you going back again! Unless it`s necessary of course. x

I'll get her a full check up when I go just to make sure nothing else is going on. She seems very happy at the moment but a little itchy by her sore. Eating and drinking fine too so Hopefully all is okay. Thank you all for the advice and will keep you posted on little Lexi x

Re: Hamster Sore?
Itchy around the sore could mean infection, like a boil/cyst. The area can feel itchy so that`s possibly why she`s feeling the itch. x
