My Hamster Is Sick!
Hi guys!
From some of the other topics that I posted, you may have known that my hamster Calypso was feeling sick. However, she seemed to be packing on the grams and getting healthier every day.
Last night, however, she started to have diarrhea again, and she has been drastically declining. I have switched her to only nutritious pellets, and I have been monitoring her very carefully. One of the biggest issues, is that she is losing weight like crazy! She already was struggling with gaining some more weight from her last illness, and this is the worst that she has ever looked! Her bones are sticking out, and she hardly moves (if not at all) when I flip her over to clean her bottom.
Taking her to a vet is not an option, as there was nothing that they could do for her the last time I took her besides prescribing rest and a plain pellet diet. Only dilligent care from me and my family helped her to get better.
Calypso is eating her hard pellets, but I fear it is not enough! Should I feed her this liquid weight gaining formula that my vet prescribed to me? I'm thinking it might be a good idea, as she needs to gain weight most desperately!
Thank you for any help you can give me!

Re: My Hamster Is Sick!
Also, Calypso has pulled one of her back claws, and it has some dried blood at the base where the nail meets the toe. We trimmed it as best as we could, but I am just so worried about her! Everything seems to be happening to her at once! Does anyone have any advice on how to treat a pulled claw?

Re: My Hamster Is Sick!
You could clean the nail with saline solution (salt and warm water)
If there is nothing you can do to help her health wise you could just make sure she is comfortable. Maybe mix her up some porridge or baby food to warm her inside out. Sadly, if the vet it's not an option, you can only keep her warm and comfy. *hugs* get better soon Calypso x

I'm not sure how long Calypso has with us at this moment. I am just comforting her, as she lies very still in my hand. I'm just hoping the very very best for her right now.

Re: My Hamster Is Sick!
It sounds like a very difficult time for you & Calypso, I really hope she can pull through.
I'm surprised the vet didn't prescribe some antibiotics just in case she has an infection that causing her problem.
If the vet gave you some liquid food then I would try to get her to take some of that if you can, some of the weight loss will be from dehydration so you need to get more fluid in if you can, soft or liquid food will help with that, some baby food, porridge or hamster food soaked in water may help.
I would also try to give her some probiotics her digestive system will really be needing the boost that can give.
Good luck with her.

Re: My Hamster Is Sick!
I've been quite sad today and yesterday, as Calypso has passed on. Since their was no vet offices open, I tried my hardest to help her any way I could. She was barely alive, and she no longer could eat or drink even with a syringe. After visiting our local vet yesterday, we discovered that she was already in a coma-like state, and her heart was beginning to fail her. Unfortunately, there was no way for her to recover, so I decided to have the vets aid her to her forever sleep over the rainbow bridge. It was really hard for me, but I know that I made the right decision. I didn't want her to suffer any more! We had her funeral earlier... It's just so hard sometimes to really truly realize that she's gone!

Re: My Hamster Is Sick!
I'm really sorry you lost little Calypso, I know how hard it is to make that decision but you did your best for her, take comfort knowing that & that she's not suffering now.
Play well at the bridge Calypso.
