Re: It's happening again :(
I wouldn't put it IN the cage ever. If he chews it and it leaks that's disaster, not to mention ingesting the plastic might be harmful. Consider getting a thermometer to keep track of the temperature. There are a couple of threads on how to keep your hammie warm in colder weather with lots of different ideas. Have a search for them I have to run now, if you don't find them I'll look later. So glad your guy came back! Good for you for recognising what the problem was. X

I agree, never put anything like that in the cage, you could put it close by but out of reach for a little extra heat source if need be.
Here's one of the threads Piebald mentioned Keeping hams warm now winter is coming

Re: It's happening again :(
Poor lad was probably cold and his body has reacted to that. Placing a water bottle wrapped in a tea towel next to his sleeping area (on the outside of the cage) leaning against the cage would be a better idea to keep that area of his cage warmer, especially during the night when temperature plummets and central heating isn`t on, although I tend to keep my heating on when it`s below zero during the night.
So pleased to hear he`s rallied. Feed him small pieces of raw veg to boost his health too as these nutrients are really important. Broccoli, cauliflower, garden peas, sweet corn, apple and carrot are all enjoyed by hamsters. Frozen veg is fine, just thaw it in a dish of cold water an hour before. Once room temperature, it`s fine to offer. Supermarkets sell small mixed bags of veggies for £1.00 and thy keep in the fridge for a good couple of weeks. x

We had opened the window nearest the Hamsters kept in aquariums as they were very hot with the 80 degree temps and we were not expecting the sudden drop. So with the window wide open and the very cold air hitting the 4 end tanks directly it caused their tanks to drop to Torpor levels.
I came home to find 4 dead or dying hamsters

Oh no, that is just horrible. So sorry

Thank you both. I'll definitely check out those threads you mentioned. I was so shocked to see him running around again when I went to check on him - I was fully expecting him to have died! Poor little guy.

Glad he is back to his normal self. I lost a lovely hamster to torpor years ago, it was very sad.
