Exclamation ADVICE please! My hamsters hair is thinning

Hi everyone

My hamster is almost one year old, he is a russian dwarf hamster and lives with his brother.

I have recently noticed his fur is thinning in one patch on his bum (its like baby fluff hair) and I dont know why its quite noticeable but he is not bald, just thinning. Is he OK?

He has been eating and drinking well, although his other brother did recently die, but he seems OK.

Please help

Have you noticed any scratching or chewing at that spot, by him or his brother? Did the brother that's passed show any symptoms or behaviour changes before he died?

No he has been acting completely normal, he doesn't react when I touch it either. His brother died suddenly and I still have no idea why..

Hello, sorry to hear about your other hamster passing. It`s inevitable that one will die before the other and they do adapt, but obviously, animals have a routine and he will miss having the company if they got on okay. If his rear end has thinning hair but the rest of his body is dense, he may have had some chasing from his cage mate that could have resulted in his rear end being pulled at or bitten, hence the hair looking a little thinner. If there are no scabs or cut/bite marks, then it`s fair to say just to monitor this and watch his behaviour in case he is pulling at it himself.

Do you feed him any raw fresh vegetables? They do make a difference to health overall so if he only gets dry mix, maybe start introducing things like these in very small pieces and gradually feed more:

Baby sweet corn
broccoli
carrot
cauliflower
garden pea
small fingernail piece of plain lettuce

These are just a few of the safe vegetables that hamsters enjoy. They are probably the best way of adding extra nutrients to the diet and you know they are not harmful. Might also give his immune system a little boost after losing his brother. x
