Default URGENT advice needed please

Hi all, my syrian Roxy (female 7 months old) last night got hold of a piece of popcorn I had dropped (stupid of me I know) but then about an hour later she started making really bad sneezing, wheezing, rasping sort of sounds and squeeking,it looked like she was struggling to breath at times and kept rubbing her nose and mouth and kept shutting her eyes tight as if she was struggling, it was really bad and loud as I could hear her in the other room and it was continuous for about 20-30 mins, I panicked after the first 5 mins and rang the emergency vet who would only see her if I paid £85 at the appointment which I did not have at the time, I took the vets advice and gave her water which she drank and I gave her a seed stick to keep her occupied while I massaged her neck incase she had it stuck in her throat, I then left her for a couple of minutes as I have severe anxiety and I needed a breather for a few moments and when I got back to her this was after as I say 20-30 mins of her doing it she had finally stopped but was very tired and laid down in the corner for a few mins, after this she got up and went back on her wheel and played as if nothing had happened, I took her hut out last night and just left her bedding in as the vet told me to well vent the cage, last night she slept in cage next to me and a few times she woke me up from making the same noises but it only lasted a few moments then she was back to sleep, I got her out this morning and she was perfectly fine, do you think this could have just been the popcorn? or do you think it could be resperitory? I checked on her on and off today while she was asleep I just walked in the room and had a listen but there was no sound from here as she is now back in her hut fast asleep, do you think I should be taking her to the vet tomorrow even if she seems ok? I am really unsure on what to do and whether it could have been the popcorn that got lodged and if that is the case why would she make these noises still after it had gone but only for a couple of minutes at a time? I want to do what is best for her so would really apprechiate some advice.

Hi katjacks. You done the right thing calling a vet even if it was to get some professional assistance at your time of panic. If she did consume any popcorn, being dry, it may have got stuck in her windpipe or throat, causing her to gasp. Long story short, if she`s fine again and not making any audible noises or acting as though something is still bothering her, it could be a matter of monitor for 24 hours, listen closely (hold her close to your ear) and listen for any unfamiliar sounds of rasping or anything you feel isn`t normal. Little whiffles of air going in and out would be normal but audible rasping or grunting, I would let a vet listen to her chest just to be sure.

How is she now? x

Thank you for the reply racinghamster, it was stuck to my cardigan as I am a messy eater lol and she grabbed it but when I went to take it back she pouched it, the vet heard her noises and she said it did sound like it had got stuck, strange how she calmed down once I massaged her neck, the vet wanted me to check her mouth but because I was alone it was basically impossible to do, I have certainly learned by this to keep money in my home and to get a first aid box too. like I say seems a bit weird she still made the noise slightly later on in the night but I am wondering if it has just scratched her or whether she maybe had a feeling it was still there as I have done this myself before and it felt like it was there even after it had gone, I did the putting her close to my ear last night and this morning and it was just the air sound, I will get her to the vet tomorrow to be on the safe side, I have got her in the bedroom as the boys are in the living room (I have 2 male syrians too) but have been in the bedroom a few times today and listened in her cage and not heard a peep out of her, she has ate and drank this morning and seemed herself, she should be up soon so can check see how she is again properly x

I have just been in the bedroom again and she is moving about and eating, no weird noises, I wonder if some of it was out of distress/panic and maybe the noises last night were cause she was annoyed with not having her hut.

Sorry for the late reply as I had to log out yesterday. I hope she has settled herself and this episode won`t cause anymore noises. She sounds okay but let your judgement guide you. x

Looks like she`s over her ordeal which is great news. You can never be too careful as small animals have a knack of finding trouble! Glad she`s fine though. Keep an eye on her regardless for the next few days. x

Best of luck. Hopefully she has just got a fright and reacted to that. x
