Default white albino dwarf hamster greater risk for health problem?

My white albino Russian dwarf hamster has been diagnosed with diabetes and Cushing's disease and pneumonia not to mention a tumor on her pancreas. she is on an antibiotic for an infection and she is on an anti inflammatory for the swelling around her pancreas they want to do surgery but the Vet isn't sure that she's healthy enough to survive the surgery to remove the tumor. I was just wondering if anybody else has problems or have heard of problems with white albino Russian dwarf hamsters

My mums hamster was a hybrid with a lot of winter white in her. She had ruby eyes. She also had so many health issues I think it just comes down to bad breeding

Really sorry about your little girl CL, I'm not sure that it has much to do with her being albino as none of those problems are exactly uncommon in russian hybrids generally, it's just very unfortunate she has so much going on, the symptoms of Cushing's & diabetes can sometimes be quite similar in the early stages, do you know what diagnostic tests your vet has done?
I hope she gets over the infection ok & is strong enough to get through surgery, it's always a big worry with such tiny hams so I wish you all the best with her.

You may think this is terrible of me but she & her sister were dying so since I wanted them to live & I didn't have the money to afford her enormous vet bills I surrendered both Zara & Xena to a private rescue company who operate on charity donations. The vet had them both in the hospital for at least 3 days & I know they underwent a series of x-rays. I'm sure there were other tests done too but I only know part of what happened. Both animals have tumors on different parts of their body & they both have infections along with other serious health problems. It was out of my league & I couldn't watch them suffer & slowly die so I did something about it. The vet said it was commendable cause i put their needs before my needs.

They are both in foster homes ( all volunteer) & getting their medicine getting ready 4 surgery. After surgery Xena (black) has already found a loving home by a lady in Pennsylvania who fell in love based on the pictures they sent her. The woman is willing to wait 2 adopt Xena as long as it takes for her to fully recover.

Zara (white) is sicker than Xena so she might live the rest of her life with a foster care Family & then be put down humanely as a last act of kindness if she doesn't grow strong enough 2 survive the surgery?

Xena will have her uterus & the tumor removed in the near future. She is happy & runs on the wheel for hours at night.

Error: it is Xena who has cushings (black) not Zara (white albino).

If they're being taken good care of I don't think anyone would think it terrible of you, all you can do is what you think best for them & coping with sick hams isn't easy even with experience so if they're now in good hands that's for the best.

Since I loved them both so much I'd like to get another white albino from a different pet store on a different city...Niagara Falls..not too far away (they have younger pets there that's why)..but not if the white albino particularly has a increased risk for health problems over the other colors.

Since I had problems with both of my dwarves & not enough money to afford vet bills I'm sure I won't take that chance again

Interested though about the white albinos particularly

I really don't know much about ham genetics but if you think about it with any animal albino is a genetic abnormality really so I guess it's possible it could increase the risk of health problems, do remember though that hybrids in general do have increased health risks, there really isn't any such thing as good breeding with hybrids as they shouldn't be bred at all although some will obviously receive better care than others.

What do you think about robo's? Especially pure white robos? Is that also a genetic abnormality? I asked the vet (not about the color but the species). They said that robos are a high risk for health problems too? It was an exotic vet & they said robos are the highest risk then the hybrids then the syrians. They recommended a Syrian for the least health problems overall?

Has anybody heard of this as being true or not?

Maybe the best thing would be to get a hamster from a breeder? You will know their genetics then and know they have had a healthy start.

A breeder would be ideal if you can find one anywhere near you but I don't know that robos are particularly prone to disease, of course they can get sick as can syrians but they are a pure species unlike the hybrids so generally seem to be less prone to problems & often live to a good age.
