Hello Candycakes75, and welcome to Hamster Central. Sorry your little hammy isn't well. Any bleeding is a cause for concern and requires a vet visit. You need to do this as soon as you can. Please let us know how you make out.

Later that night, I discovered he had actually been urinating the blood, he has been drinking a lot, and the bleeding has virtually stopped, or at least slowed down.

Hello again candycakes. He will still need to see a vet. It is likely that he has a urinary infection. These are best seen to before they become an even more serious matter.

I must agree with DrKMcK, Hamsters can hide illnesses very well, and the fact you saw blood and could conclude it was from him urinating tells me your little guy has a very good UTI which can not be healed by waiting and seeing what happens. He needs Antibiotics and a warm cage to assist him in staying strong enough to battle this infection.

You may also consider offering him a tiny bit of 100% Cranberry juice(not cocktail as that has added sugars) or a tiny piece of dried Cranberry as this will make the urinary tract unpleasant for the Bacteria to thrive in the Urinary Tract. However you still will need some kind of Vet only prescription Antibiotic to rid his urinary tract of this bad bacteria caused infection.

Im trying to find a vet that will deal with hamsters, and i have even emailed a few, and all of the ones i have found are really far away. Im 14 and cant drive. Im worried that when i do find one, and i make an appointment, it will be to late.

Hope you manage to find a vet for him - sorry I don't know about costs in the US. It does sound like he might need antibiotics.

I do hope that you find a vet for him- With a quick Google search I can tell you that it will cost you anywhere from $20-$50 depending on the vet.

I was out all day today at a marching band competition. without telling me, my dad decided to take matters into his own hands. He called a vet, an decided we may not have enough time, and he also did not want to pay.

He ended up calling the pet store that i got him from (Grayson came with a 7 day warranty) and they took him for the weekend, and are treating him with the medicine i told my dad he needed (I think its called baytril). Now i do not know if i really trust this pet store too much (their animal care is not ideal) but my dad did not give me an option.
