Sounds good to me. Keep your options open as regards another vet and yes, antibiotics can cause bowel upset, so if he`s been on Baytril for two weeks for sneezing and the symptoms have gone, it`s fair to say stopping the treatment could be in his best interests for now until you monitor his health over the rest of this week and then take things from there. Was he prescribed Baytril initially for a respiratory issue or something else? x

I agree that after a couple of weeks & as his other symptoms have cleared up now it may well be a good idea to stop the antibiotics & see if that makes a difference.
It does make it less likely to be wet tail with all the antibiotics too, much more likely too much fruit, veg & possibly yogurt so you're doing the best thing with your current approach.

If he doesn't enjoy the oats as they are don't be afraid to try making some porridge, he needs moisture obviously so a little wet porridge is still a good idea.

Hope he's better soon.

Racinghamster - He was on antibiotics for a sneeze and suspected abscess on his eye. His sneeze has since cleared up but his eye is still sore looking. Could be something to do with his teeth etc- but sadly the vets weren't helpful on this matter.

That being said I agree the antibiotics should be stopped, but after reading that they might treat wet tail, I am reluctant to in case I make the wrong call.

Cypher - you have made me feel better saying it's less likely to be Wet tail. I also spoke to a university friend who used to breed many rodents, including hamsters, and he also said that it is more than likely the abundant of veg, fruit and yogurt. He told me to go and by Probiotics and oats as well.

This may clear up fairly quick but if it doesn't get better immediately try not to worry too much, give it a few days & just make sure he stays hydrated, fingers crossed he'll finally be a healthy happy ham again very soon!

Honestly, Cypher, he was never a healthy hammy except for maybe the first week. He has always had something - that being said we have had him a short time and the majoirty of it has been spent with him on antibiotics or eye drops. Hopefully this clears up and it's the end.

He is a long hair and his skirt is currently covered in poo - do you suggest cutting the skirt? Would that be okay or would it stress him out?

I have zero experience of long haired syrians so I really wouldn't like to say.
I'd try to wash it with damp cotton wool, maybe just a little at a time if you can to reduce stress, hopefully someone else will have more experience, I don't suppose cutting it would be too much of a problem but I would definitely think of it as a last resort.

I am stuck in the university until the traffic lets up into the city, but once I get home and gather up the needed supplies I will attempt to clean him up again. If no change has been seen by tomorrow, in regards to his hair, I will cut his skirt.
