No updates yet. I've unfortunately been on holiday this past week so Cookie is back home. As you could probably tell, I've been worrying all week about him and my other ham, Nibbles who may have mites and a neurological disorder. But I'll be back home tomorrow to take care of my babies and I'll give you an update then xx

I'm back home! Okay so when I got back Cookie's cage was trashed. He had pushed all his toys away, knocked things over including his water bottle and he has been doing long green soft poos again. Then I looked inside his plastic house to find a load of pee/stool mixed together inside it, could it be diahorrea (can't spell it) ? So I held Cookie and he just sat there, usually he goes hyper and climbs all over me but he just stared at me so I put him back in the cage and he done the same, he wasn't very active. Also before I left to go on holiday, I gave each of my hamsters two filled-to-the-top bowls of food and Cookie has only ate just less than half out of each bowl. He has seemed to left all the healthy things and eaten all the seeds, corn etc. He's just acting strange and I don't know what to do. Advice would be very appreciated atm

I still think it would be worth checking with a vet to see what's going on with Cookie tbh, did you try the probiotics yet?
A change in behaviour may be at least partly due to you being away, change in routine & just not having you around, it could take a while to get over that.
Not sure what you mean about the food though, seeds & corn are healthy things! What has he left that you're concerned about?

I'm going today to get the probiotics and I'll try them before I go to a vet. He might have just been stressed that I wasn't there since he always enjoys being handled everyday with me. I always thought that seeds & corn were the less healthy things in food mixes, oops. Anyways he isn't eating the flaked peas and the kind of crunchy orange and green bits of the harry hamster mix but he might just be picky atm. Thanks x

I agree the behaviour thing just sounds like he was confused about you not being there, and not being very active when you picked him up was also just him taking in all the smells and things on you after being away!

Did you try weighing him yet? I'd do that and start on the probiotics straight away, he may be losing weight if he isn't digesting food properly. Does he usually eat all those bits or is it a new food? Maybe as he had so much he has just been able to be picky and eat all his favourites, like a kid in a candy store!

This may sound silly but can I just weigh him with kitchen scales? lol Was very busy today and nearest P@H is a decent drive away so I didn't get round to buying the probiotics First thing tomorrow, I'll get them.

Update on the food situation: No worries Cookie has suddenly eaten all his food.Went to check on him and both bowls were empty all of a sudden. Maybe he just lost his appetite?? I dunno

Hello Robodwarfs. I'm starting to be a little concerned about your little hammy. This has been going on for a fair bit...2 weeks. If he has loose stools any more he will really need to see a vet. Hamsters are small little critters and can get really sick, really fast.

Thanks for your concern. Just starting him on Pro-C Probiotic. Hoping it works. If not I will definitely take him to a vet. I did find under his substrate, a half chewed plastic part of his tunnel the other day, could that maybe have caused it? I obviously removed it but I'm starting to worry that that could have caused it

It's highly unlikely the plastic would have caused this, if they chew plastic they normally spit it out but if it is swallowed it would be more likely to cause a blockage or possibly internal bleeding if sharp so do be careful to check anything chewable in the cage frequently.

Hopefully the probiotics will help, as you haven't been giving him veg (if I remember rightly?) he may just have an imbalance of bacteria in his gut, if he does improve I would start to consider slowly introducing some fresh veg & maybe some dried herbage too.
Have you tried feeding a few oats? That might help too.
I wouldn't wait too long for an improvement before checking this out with a vet though.
