Too much wee in one night, UTI?
Hi guys, today I was so shocked to see my male syrian's toilet area full of wee. I just cleaned it out the night before because he wet all the sand inside. This morning i found that he filled 1/4 of the bowl with his urine as I did not put sand to check his wee. The wee is quite clear, no signs of blood or foul odor. It smells like his normal pee (yes i know the smell of their pee 😅 . He's eating as usual but hes been chewing on his water bottle recently. Is he sick or did he just drink too mch water while chewing the spout?
I would be able to take him to the vets on saturday as I used up all my leaves for this year :/ . For the mean time is there anyway to determine if it's UTI or something? And are there any preventive measures I can do before Saturday comes?

Re: Too much wee in one night, UTI?
It could be either really, he may be getting too much water if he's chewing the bottle but sometimes the first signs of a UTI are just peeing & drinking more.
If you can get a fresh urine sample you could get some dip sticks from the chemist which should tell you if things are normal or not & give you an ideas what might be going on, if it continues might still be worth a vet check on Saturday just to be sure.

Re: Too much wee in one night, UTI?
Urinary tract infections usually show in various forms. Not being able to urinate (bacterial infection or blockage), or being able to urinate but some blood can also be present in the urine. Over urinating can be a sign of kidney disease or in susceptible species, diabetes.
He may have consumed more water than necessary if he`s chewing at the bottle spout, but this behaviour should be addressed where necessary. I he gets too many fresh foods these can also contain water. Things like lettuce for example. Although fresh raw veggies are very good for them so I wouldn`t blame those entirely.
Is the water bottle over the area where he does his peeing or near his sand? Just wondering if an drips could be the cause, but sand can also look clumpy when water is added to it, so it may look worse than when on another substrates like shavings or one of the paper based litters. x

Re: Too much wee in one night, UTI?
Thanks for the reply guys, just to update, today he didn't wee so much, only his normal amount of pee during the day. I'll be observing him until Friday if there is anything unusual. Lately they've been eating blueberries and broccoli once or twice a week so I'm not sure if he's eating too much veggies with water. Would yogurt help if he has UTI?
@cypher: I'm not quite if they sell dip sticks here, i'll check some local pharmacies if they have. Right now no signs of blood, but he just wee'd again as I type this.
@racinghamster: His sand is on the other side of the cage actually He's been chewing his bottle to get attention. My female syrian previously did this on her water bottle until she got bored of it. Now he's the one doing it to demand out time but I'm trying not to encourage the behaviour by ignoring him until he stops. :/

Re: Too much wee in one night, UTI?
lol! I know what it's like when you're worried, just when you think they're fine they start drinking a lot or weeing a lot all over again!
It does sound as though he may just have got too much water with his attention seeking, blueberries & broccoli once or twice a week isn't much at all so I'm sure it's nothing to do with that.
Hopefully you have nothing more to worry about than stopping the bottle chewing, fingers crossed!

Re: Too much wee in one night, UTI?
Is his pee smellier than usual? Is it darker?
You could put some shredded white toilet paper where he wees to get an idea of the colour of his pee.
But as mentioned, it might just be his water bottle. You're doing the right thing ignoring him when he chews it, he'll soon get fed up being ignored.

Re: Too much wee in one night, UTI?
He's clear for 2 days now after we removed the bottle. He chews when he wants to go out so we removed the bottle for a while then gave him out time. My SO has been helping me play with him as I'm quite busy this week. I feel bad I haven't spent time with my syrians this week. :/ He has access to his bottle every 20 mins of playing outside, then when he's on he's way to chew it we call him out.
My syrians never picked on their bottles. They usually chewed on their wood toys and BB, my male syrian is never a chewer. This is his first time chewing a part of his cage. My hams might be reading too much of the Resistance newsletters they have a new way of calling our attention!

Re: Too much wee in one night, UTI?
The HRN has a lot to answer for lol!
I guess the water bottle chewing is still a bit of a concern but it's good to hear that it's just that & nothing actually wrong with him.

Re: Too much wee in one night, UTI?
It is almost certainly the bottle chewing. They injest far too much water doing this and it upsets the blood electrolyte balance and strains the kidneys so you need o stop it. I'd suggest removing the bottle and using a small heavy bowl for water for at least two weeks. Next put the bottle back but either higher or lower or in a different spot but only during daytime when he gets up for a quick wee and a drink. You can try dangle the bottle on a string as they can't get a grip to chew it then. Then allow bottle in the evening and remove overnight but always monitoring him. Hamster wee should be slightly think and cloudy and not very copious and dilute. That is a sign of water bottle chewing or kidney failure.
Some hamsters need a bowl all their life if they take a reall liking to bottle chewing!
