Help hamster teeth
Hi I noticed my hamster has broken his bottom teeth and his top teeth are quite long. I'm going to get him to the vet early next week. Is there anything I can do in the mean time? He is nearly two years old.

Re: Help hamster teeth
Does he seem to have any difficulty eating or drinking? If so you might want to offer softer foods like porridge or baby food until you can see the vet.

Re: Help hamster teeth
He hasn't lost any weight but has stopped chewing his blocks, antos chews etc. He absolutely hates having his mouth checked. He went into shock the last time I took him to the vet to have his teeth checked. He isn't a hands on hamster if you see what I mean. I only noticed his teeth because he yawned.
I gave him some mashed up pellets and will buy baby food tomorrow

Re: Help hamster teeth
How even is one bottom tooth to the other? If they are close, my vet says it will be okay. Does he have plenty to chew on?

Re: Help hamster teeth
Hi yes he has several different types of chews, an antos chew, seed block and markies. He won't chew on wood or anything that does taste good.

Re: Help hamster teeth
It`s difficult to say how they break teeth but it may have been by gnawing on something tough or he`s twanged a tooth chewing bars or something else.
The main question is, is he eating his normal mix without difficulty? It might be wise to remove so many chews right now to determine how he is managing to eat his normal mix. I would also pop out and buy a bag of Supreme Science Selective Hamster biscuits. These can be broken up or made soft by adding a little water to make the biscuit softer. It`s always a good food to have in for ill or older hamsters because when they have mouth or teeth issues, it`s best that they are eating a diet suited to them rather than switching immediately to human based foods.
I would concentrate on his actual diet for now and check how he`s nibbling/chewing. If the teeth are good and not slack, he should still be managing to eat somewhat. But it`s vital that he can.
