Very red bottom?
Our hamster (Chocky) is not quite tame yet so we are unable to give him a health check, however I noticed his bottom appears rather red (see photos). Does it look normal or do we need to take him to a vet you think? Anybody have any experience?

Re: Very red bottom?
am very tempted to take him to vets. on the other hand he does not seem to be in any discomfort and is an unusually happy hammie this morning... would hate him getting scared of some strange hands all over again... will wait till tomorrow i think

Re: Very red bottom?
Was it warm when this picture was taken? It looks like it probably was from the picture. Someone else might say different but it doesn't look like its a painful red it more looks like lots of blood flow because I am warm sort of red to me. Their balls can be a weird purply sort of colour as well.
I would always say take to the vet if in doubt though, never worth the risk.

Re: Very red bottom?
He looks to have been washing his `nether region` and pulled it forward. The genital area/scrotum can be a pink/fleshy colour. It doesn`t look inflamed to me in those images. x

Re: Very red bottom?
Yes it was pretty warm, and he also was very sleepy (he shortly fell asleep in one of the boxes during the playtime... honestly - how boring can we be to a hamster? this was supposed to be play time!)
Had a quick inspection today through the ball. Could not see it properly but it does not appear very red. So you think it could be normal? What is the spot thingy in the middle, is it his bits? As I could not see it properly just used the camera with a flash and then inspected the photo, cannot really tell what it was...

Yes, the little `dot` is his penile piece!!! It looks as though he`s pulled his lower regions forward to wash them. Most hamsters do this. x

Re: Very red bottom?
Thanks all, am feeling so much better now! Since he is a happy little soul and you think it looks fairly normal (and he still got his manhood ) I suppose we can postpone vet visit. Was worried that spending a lot of time in his tiny house with all his output in there gave him infection or something (I do clean his house every other day or so) but obviously not.
(and yes he was grooming himself and entertaining himself by pulling his poo out and flicking it at us - of which you can see some evidence in the photo)
Thanks again for putting my mind at rest!

Re: Very red bottom?
No problem Nube. He looks fine to me and the poo flicking seems to be a favourite pastime for Syrians! Check him periodically and if any doubt arises, then a check up by your vet won`t do him any harm, but all looks well to me. x
