You could put smooth stone under the water bottle so every time your hamster drinks, his claws would be slightly filed down. Im sure others will have some suggestions.

Hiya. Once the claws start to `curl` around, they are better clipped off to make them normal again. Any vet would do this for you for a small charge, but it can be done using human nail clippers, although I would only recommend you do this if you are confident and only snip off the very ends of the claw and don`t/never attempt to go higher than the growth you consider to be too long. Natural wear does help, but as a hamster ages, they are not as active and sometimes the claws can just grow longer. x

It takes guts and patience to clip their nails. My elder robos have a regular nail clipping session now since they don't run too much. Looking back, I got a lot of nips during the clipping session. If you want to clip his nails, better prepare a box/bin where you can put him to rest when he's struggling really hard. It also doubles as protection if he escapes or jumps out of your hand. Have some treats ready to distract him and don't cut too short and don't be hasty. You can let him rest before proceeding to the next paw. My SO helped me during the first sessions since i had to hold their little paws out then he will clip the nails.
