bump on eyelid

hi all!

I'm new to this website and just wanted to get your opinion on something.
One of my Russian hamsters has a bump on the corner of her bottom eyelid. It isn't leaking any fluid. It's slightly red but not sore looking. It doesn't seem to bother her at all - her behaviour is still exactly the same. I'll try and get a picture if I can get her to keep still long enough but in the meantime does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be?

Hi ePun, welcome. By your description I would think it`s a typical dwarf hamster eye cyst. They usually start off small and sit on the eyelid but they can grow, so for now, you need to monitor it for size and any indication that it`s getting bigger, I would see a good vet who may offer to remove it or cauterise it while it`s small. They look a bit like a small sty. Will try and get a photo example and if you can also get a photo, you can compare them. x

Here you go. Your may not look like this but they can swell larger and affect the eye opening.

It`s worth keeping a close eye on. If it seems to be getting larger I would have a vet look at it. But also be aware that some vets will just say leave it alone, while others will prescribe Baytril in the hope that will cure it. These are all wasted measures because if a cyst like this is growing larger, it`s likely to be what I suggested and these little cysts are much better removed while small in size rather than waiting until the swell up and cover half the eye.
