Flea question
Hi,
My mums cat has fleas and I have been bitten whilst there. I'm a little concerned that I've brought some home with me as Larry is a little more agitated than usual. I've tried so hard to lure him out of the cage but because of his Russian ways he isn't having any of it. I don't know when he'll next fancy coming out so I really need some advice on how I should be checking him and how to go about it/what I should even be looking for. My mum said they're different fleas but I'm sure she's lying! The only way he'll let me touch him is if he's eating otherwise he'll have me. I'm about to change his food bowl so this is the perfect opportunity. I could probably lift the bowl out with him in as I've done this before without him kicking off at me.

Re: Flea question
Though Fleas can bite hamsters it is uncommon for this to occur. I Have had cats come in with fleas and they DID get on the Hamsters and I had to use Fiproguard spray(Only found in the USA sad to say) on them as well as the cats to be rid of the flea pest.
I would think Spot on for Rodents would work to rid a hamster of fleas should you find any fleas on Larry, BUT I would NOT treat him unless you actually find fleas on him.

Re: Flea question
Has the cat been treated for the fleas? They can be a real menace and the last thing you want is to carry them on your clothing and into your own home. Especially if they get into the shavings and start breeding.
My advice would be keep your distance from the cat and perhaps mum`s home until the fleas are eradicated. The good thing about fleas is they can be seen with the naked eye on an animals skin/in the fur moving around. But I truly hope none have got into your hamster`s cages. x

I bought a flea comb today, pack of two. My mum did her cat and found nothing so they must be living in her carpet. I am going to attempt to comb Larry but it's very doubtful that it'll work

Re: Flea question
Since I have a dog who plays in the yard, even though he gets flea drops every month, and I also have the 3 cats who do come in the house now and then, I tend to do a preventative spray of my hammy cages when I do a clean-out. I have UltraCare Flea & Tick spray. It is for rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils. mice and hamsters. I don't spray the pet. After I clean the cage I spray the bottom and sides, I wipe everything down with a dry paper towel and let it air dry. The I put the bedding and all the rest back in. So far, I've never had anything bother the hammies.

THanks, I'll try and see if I can find some of this. I'm probably just being very paranoid because I've checked Larry, the best I can, and haven't found anything. He's probably a little stressed at the moment with the scent of a new being in the room. He started to be naughty as soon as Winston moved in, biting the bars if he heard my 'hamster voice' being used elsewhere, jealous little thing.
