Re: Waking up with wet mouth
The soaked crackers are a hit! Thank goodness! I think I'll go and get some science selective biscuits though, as I need to get sawdust anyway. Picking up her cage tomorrow and I think that will probably make a huge difference to her mood, even though it won't make the inflammation go away.

Re: Waking up with wet mouth
Well done! Hopefully the antibiotics will kick & do the trick now then.

Re: Waking up with wet mouth
She's squeaking a lot in her nest, not sure if she's asleep because I can hear rustling. She sounds in pain though. Is there anything I can do to comfort her? She's not the cuddling type :/

What type of antibiotic did the vet give you?

Re: Waking up with wet mouth
I'd just let her rest & keep her quiet for now, especially if she's not the cuddly type, peace & quiet is probably the best thing, there isn't much you can do unless the vet thinks she may need some pain meds.

Re: Waking up with wet mouth
I agree. The squeaking might be a sign she`s feeling something. Squeaking in the nest can be concerning but she may be feeling whatever is annoying her. If she continues squeaking and starts to behave in a manner your not happy with like agitation, I would get back to the vet. But yes, the science selective biscuits are great for this purpose.
Let us know how she is tomorrow. x

Re: Waking up with wet mouth
Had to go back to my uni house this morning but I'm back this evening with her MDM which will hopefully make her more comfortable. Noticed she's actually hoarding the crackers which makes dosing it really difficult. I really thought she'd eaten them so not sure what to do now. I might try the vets if there's no improvement by Thursday - I think they'll need time to kick in.

Re: Waking up with wet mouth
That`s the problem with hamsters, they hoard! Try this:
Take a shelled sunflower seed, half a peanut, a pumkin seed and a small piece of science selective biscuit and a half dry mealworm if you have any.
Bash these up in a pestle & mortar until they resemble a powder. Add a drop (and I mean a drop!) of water and bind together. This should now be a ball of soft crumbs, but not mush. Mould together using a teaspoon.
Break a small piece off and add the medicine inside to hide it. Offer this to her when she`s awake and she should find it too tasty to pouch and eat it straight away. I mash these up as treats as they are all natural to a hamster so they smell nutty and tasty. I sometimes add a tiny bit of dry banana from the hamster food just to add more taste, but it`s not essential. Hope this helps. x

Re: Waking up with wet mouth
It is hard to tell with hams whether they've actually eaten something or just stashed it, it does make dosing very difficult but I've found mixing with baby food seems to work, they actually seem to eat that straight off, as far as it's possible to tell that is!

Re: Waking up with wet mouth
I am not sure on what to do regarding the inflamed cheek pouch but what you could do regarding the bottle to stop leaking is that you could maybe invest in a drip- proof bottle. Sorry that I couldn't help more.
