Default Ginny's weight....

Hello fellow hamster lovers,

I was just wandering if anyone could tell me how much an 8 month old female syrian hamster should weigh. It seems like she is a little skinny at the moment. I had some friends visit me recently who also own hamsters and also commented on her light weight.

I weighed her and she is a little over 110 grams.

What do you think?

Thank you,
A.s. And Ginny xxx

Hamster weights vary a lot, especially between breeder hamsters and shop bought hamsters. I think whats more important is weight change. If you are concerned she is suddenly losing weight, then weigh her every couple days at the same time every of day. I use kitchen scales and put my hamster in a bowl. If you see a constant weight loss you should consider a vet visit. Weight loss if often the earliest sign something is wrong.

Generally I weigh my hamsters once a week - even if all seems well just to keep an eye on things

Every syrian is different.
My youngest at 9 months is about 190g.
I would keep a close eye on your ham's weight, it is a bit on the light side.
Is she eating and drinking OK?
If you want to get her weight up, then Dried MealWorms, extra sunflower seeds and peanuts.
I give mine a bit of baby food everyday and I make sure she gets fresh veggies 5 days a week and fruit 2 days a week.

Hello there,

Thank you both for replying to my post, I will try and feed her more foods suggested and weigh her frequently to keep an eye on her.

I feed her once a day about a teaspoon of hamster food mix and treat her with a small piece of cucumber or Apple once every two days. Do you think that is enough? She does drink and eat a good amount for her it seems, when I give her food, she stores it and runs off but I can hear her crunching on it in her cage.

Thank you,
A.S. & ginny xx

One teaspoon for a Syrian is a bit on the light side when compared to what mine eat daily which is 2 to 2 1/2 tablespoons full.

A healthy Syrian hamster can weigh anything between 100-200g.
However, some can weigh up to 300g and still be healthy!!!

I would increase her hamster mix to at least 2 Tablespoons.
A teaspoon isn't very much. Hamsters like to be able to hoard some of their food.
I recommend Dried Mealworms - you can pick up a bag from Poundland, PoundWorld or BM store.
Give her 3 mealworms everyday.
If you can, give her some fresh veg 5 days of the week and a piece of fruit 2 days of the week.
Mine love chicken & turkey, most hamsters love it.
I do give mine a teaspoon of baby food most days too.
