Yummy has Pyometra

After her first heat on saturday Yummy now has a terrible smelling pus like discharge from her vulva, and I mean it smells terrible so bad I gagged. Think I jinxed her D: I told my partner we have to keep an eye on her now in case she gets it, now she has it so I jinxed her.

A vet has been called we wanted to make an apppointment for her to get spayed, the vet said its not a common procedure, the hamster can die just from being put under and most people don't have it done as its expensive. They suggested antibiotics but they won't even help. After more discussion they told my partner to fill out a contact form with information that they wanted, such as weight and what was wrong with her.

We're waiting to hear back from the vet about price and an appointment.

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't have any experience with Pyo at all. I'd never even heard of it until I joined the forum but it just sounds horrible. I really hope you get some answers & some good advice x

So sorry to hear this. It is a horrible illness but I hope your vet can help her out & treat her one way or another.

My partner got a call from the vet they have issued antibiotics for her instead of making an appointment for an operation, they want to give her meds to see if it helps. From everything I've read and from previous female hamsters who got it, this is a pointless waste of money and time as antibiotics do not cure the problem.

I'm sitting here half angry and half wanting to bash my head against a wall.

Try a different vet. The first one sounded uncertain of his/her ability to carry out the operation and may be issuing the antibiotics in part because of that. Presumably a vet can use google like the rest of us and see the advice that treatment is useless. If you do not have any other vet to try, go back to that one with what you have found out and have an honest conversation about it. If you are happy enough with the vet's skills to try the op, tell him/her you understand the risks and you will sign a waiver of liability for the surgery (this means you will not sue them if it goes wrong). Most vets have you sign a waiver anyway but no harm in offering.

My partner is still talking to them while he's at work (as I don't have a dutch number or speak dutch) Basically they want to rule out other infections by going this route, sadly there is no other place nearby we can go to that will see small animals. Other vets in the area are for cats and dogs, further ones are an hour away or more.

I know what it is, I know that the medicine won't help or work. I feel like I'm at a dead end right now hopefully we can get her sorted for an operation regardless of the medication, putting any animal under for an operation is always a risk an owner runs. I don't want to see her suffer, I will let you know what happens.

I don't think you should self diagnose and she needs seen first and examined to see exactly what is going on. Even if it is a pyo it is normal to give antibiotics for a few days to prepare for the spay. This can help the size of the womb decrease and a number of the bacteria killed which will make the op less risky.
You may want to consider a scan first to see if the womb is indeed full of pus. It is possible for hamsters to get lower vaginal infections that do respond to antibiotics. I'd start the meds and book her in to be checked in around 3 days with a view to spaying. You are giving her the best chance with a successful operation by starting them now and she will continue with them after any operation anyway. I hope she responds well and you can get her seen.

Picking up the meds soon as my partner gets home, right now the vet has done this all over the phone without even seeing her. I hope you're right Souffle, we'll make an appointment for her to be seen when we pick up the stuff. I am assuming they will want to see her after a few days, fingers crossed.

I think I stressed myself out...

My partner took Yummy to the vet today, it was agreed she needed the operation. His mum has just been by to drop her off to me after picking her up, the vet said her uterus was filled with pus and was swollen.

I have some Baytril to give her for five days, right now she is in a recovery cage with no bars and is currently sleeping. I was told she was very angry and even pouted at the apple they offered her. I have to give her meds and she has some silver stuff on her I will need to wash off her eventually, right now I don't want to handle her as I know she will be in pain and very sore.

Partner is picking up some baby food for her on his way home. The vet is going to post up pictures of Yummy on their facebook, as they said she was very special. I'm just glad she is okay.
