Is this bedding safe?
Hey guys, does anyone know if this Animal Dreams compressed wood shaving' are safe for my Syrian? A little skeptical because I can't find anywhere (on the packaging or online) what wood they use? I can't get down to the store for more carefresh and this is what my sister uses for her mice. Help please!

Hi charcobain - I haven't used the Animal Dreams brand before. I have looked on their website and it only says that the shavings are from "field timber - that is on an annual replanting scheme." Although pine trees are part of such schemes, I guess there are other trees too. I know I haven't answered your question, I have maybe given someone else some additional information that they can use.

That's alright, just a bit concerned because they sell and advertise wool/fluff as a safe bedding so I wasnt sure if this was false "safe" advertising also.

Re: Is this bedding safe?
I've just looked at another part of the site, and it states there that the wood shavings are from soft wood, so that increases the likelihood that they are made from pine wood.
They specialise in bedding, although they have "wool" but everything else seems appropriate.
Hope that helps some more charcobain.

Re: Is this bedding safe?
These should be fine but try not to use shavings straight from the bag as they smell very strong (have a sniff and you will see what I mean!) Can`t be nice having that scent close to your nose 24 hours!
I air shavings out in a plastic storage box (without a lid) a month before using. In that time, I shake them about and release any fine dust. This does help eliminate the new smell shavings gives off (phenol).
Mice are far more prone to sneezing and respiratory problems, so shavings are not the best substrate for mice to be on. Aubiose (hemp) is much better for mice. x
