Re: help please
By taking him to the vet this shows your children that having a pet you take the rough with the smoothe, that some pets need vet attention and that there's so many medications to help them recover.
Too many parents would take the easy way out of this situation by returning the hamster to the shop and getting a brand new one and sending out the wrong message that it's OK to do this.
I hear so many stories about kids getting fed up with their pets because they've seen another nicer pet and the parents putting the unwanted pet up for sale or abandoning it. It's not the right message.
Children look up to their parents.
I know you've not had him long and got him like that but I know you care about him because you've come on here asking for advice and you know we'll be honest with you as everyone of us are dedicated hamster owners.
Keep us posted about the vet appointment.
And I'd see about trying to get some of the vet cost from the shop owner but, you'd need to prove you've been to the vet. I'm sure the vet would provide this.
Good Luck!

I am an animal lover and wouldn't want to think what they'd do with him if the simply swapped him for another.
It's not what we want!
Will keep you all informed to what the vet say's on Wednesday.

Re: help please
Hi folks.
Just an update from today.
My Wife took Nibbles to the vets and the vet said it was a growth, probably not cancerous and they could operate to remove but there would be a chance he wouldn't make it .
She said he didn't seem in any pain so basically just keep and eye on it and him.
My Wife also phoned the pet shop and they got a bit funny with her saying She should have taken him back within seven days and they did not notice any growth when they sold him to us.
I'm a bit annoyed at them because it was there all along but we thought it was just normal ( we ain't experts )
Not sure whether I should send them the £18 vets bill.?
Anyway, the main thing is Nibbles seems fine in himself and we don't care if he has a lump on his rear end,as long as he isn't in any type of pain,we'll be monitoring the little fella

Re: help please
That's great to hear you took Nibbles to the vets, and also great to hear he's not in any pain, the last thing you want to worry about is your Hamster being in pain and not being able to do anything for him. With regards to sending the pet shop the vet bill, have you got any proof that it was there when you got him? Could the vet not estimate how long its been there for? They should definitely pay the vet bill but I doubt they would without any proof the growth was there whilst Nibbles was in there care

Hi,I guess the vet could have estimated it..
I mean,a lump like that does not appear overnight,i'm in two minds whether to go in myself at the weekend and show him to them,I don't like people trying it on with my family.

Re: help please
I completely understand where your coming from, you paid for your Hamster and they are a Pet Shop that should provide basic needs to there pets something they have obviously failed to do. Go and show the Pet Shop the growth and maybe this will make them realise how bad it actually is and will hopefully pay for the vet bills as they should. Let us know how you get on and good luck

Re: help please
I'm so glad everything went OK at the vet.
You'll have to keep an eye on Nibbles, he'll for sure want to scratch or nibble at it. Also for any changes in the size or colour.
As for the petshop, do you really want to take Nibbles back there to show the owner? He's had enough stress and will sense your stress by being taken back there. Take as many photos, do a video on your phone but leave him at home when you go to see the owner.
But, what I would do, is check out the rest of the hamsters and if you're concerned about anything, you can report him.
I don't know what country you live in but they'll be advice on what to do, who to contact.
Also does this petshop have a website or Facebook that you can comment on?
Ask for the £18 and should he say no, make that comment on the site and post the pics.
No shop owner likes bad reviews and a lot of people do rely on the public opinion of many shops/businesses.
