Sandy got sick
Yesterday one of our female hamsters got very sick, she had a crusty rear end, laid on her side panting, was cold, lethargic and dehydrated. I spent four hours with her just curled up on my lap tucked in the bottom of my shirt, she barely moved until she felt warmer. Usually she is running over me and trying to climb about, when she did feel better she wobbled on her feet then fell over to pant. She waddles normally because I swear something is odd about her hips, she's also a runt so smaller and thinner than her sister who is bigger and plumper.
We took her to the vet today and she got given some medicine, she also looked a lot better and despite her crusty rear end was running around like yesterday never happened. None of us knew what was wrong with her. She has also been seperated from her sister due to being sick, is now in a cage of her own with some of her food and a piece of hard boiled egg. Perhaps she was stressed? We're hoping Sandy makes a full recovery from whatever ailed her, she certainly gave me a scare yesterday with how ill she seemed to be.
Both sisters are ten or eleven weeks old.

Re: Sandy got sick
What did the vet say?
What medicine did she get?
Usually when the vet gives a pet medicine they usually have an idea what's wrong?
I hope she's better real soon!

Re: Sandy got sick
Antibiotics in case she had any infection, she wasn't showing any of the symptons that she had yesterday other than a wet bum. Can't say what's up with her if she's not having symptoms, if she gets worse she has to be taken back.

Re: Sandy got sick
Poor Sandy! Glad she perked up a bit today though.
Hopefully the antibiotics will work and she'll be back to normal in no time x

Re: Sandy got sick
I hope so. Also hoping it was just stress, she's in her own cage now to get better. Shame cos now she will be used to being on her own, and so will her sister.

Re: Sandy got sick
Maybe you should keep them on their own. Sometimes if they've been apart and put back in the same cage they can start fighting and then you must separate them.

Re: Sandy got sick
Sandy is doing better already after one day of being in her own cage she has improved a lot more, we're going to keep them apart as we can't reintroduce them and Sandy would just get sick again. Though we saw no physical signs of fighting or even heard them fight, I think Cindy might have been a bully in other ways to cause this to happen. All signs now are pointing to stress, specially since she is rapidly improving now.

Re: Sandy got sick
That's great news about Sandy.
She'll be loving having her own home.
