Companion Care vets
I have booked Dolly in for a consultation to get her lump checked. I've never had to take an animal to a vets before so have no scope for comparison for fees or experience.
The consultation will cost me £20, how does this compare to other peoples' vets?
Does anyone have experience of using Companion Care? Also do you know if they offer a discount for pets bought at p@h?
Thanks peeps!

Re: Companion Care vets
£20 is quite expensive for a small hammy. I took my hammy to the vet yesterday and spent £22 which included the consultation and a shot of vitamins and antibiotics.
But if this is the best vets in area I would stick with it, as it's worth the extra to make sure they're ok

Re: Companion Care vets
My local vets cost about £27 for any small furry other than rabbits ( hamster, guinea pigs etc) and when I took my syrian there they knew a fair bit of info on hamsters. I haven't had experience with the p@h vets but if it is the best vets in the area, go the there.

Re: Companion Care vets
Last time I took a hamster to our "regular" vet (ie cat & dog type vet) it cost about £30 consultation fee & that was about 7 years ago. More recently I discovered we have an exotics vet locally so have registered the hams with them & when I asked what the consultation fee would be they said about £50. Which is a lot of money but I figure they are more likely to know what's going on & get it sorted quicker than our regular vets (who are execellent with the cats, by the way). Particularly as one of mine is tiny robo who doesn't like being handled! Past vet trips with hamsters over the years, of which thankfully there haven't been many, have resulted, in some cases in, a vet who isn't much better sat handling the hamsters than me & the diagnosis being a bit vague. I don't know if we're more expensive being down south.

Re: Companion Care vets
Our vets consultation fee is £15 + medication price on top, if needed. Our vets are actually pretty good with the hamsters. I think that all of my hamsters, apart from Winnie have been to the vets at least once. Bella has been to the vets twice last week and she is going again on Monday, so that plus Baytril is about £55.
Taking a hamster to the vets is expensive, but if you find a vet that you trust and that understand hamsters it is worth it, (quite a few vets have not a lot of experience with hamsters and mainly treat cats and dogs).

Re: Companion Care vets
The vet that the family dog goes to wanted to charge me £65 to look at Angel and have her teeth done. Nope.
I now go to my local Vets4Pets, where they seem to have a good bit of hamster knowledge. Consultation fee is £10, and I think I paid £21 for a hamster to be seen and get antibiotics.

Re: Companion Care vets
I use an exotics vet and they charge £30.50 consultation fee, although I've never taken a ham. She is highly experienced with buns etc though.

Re: Companion Care vets
I`ve heard good things about Companion Care vet in Pets At Home although I`ve never used their services myself. My own vet charges me around £7.00 odds for consultation and Baytril. If I`ve had any surgery carried out like a gerbil`s scent gland removal or a mammary tumour removed from a mouse, it never cost me more than £30. The taxi fares cost me more! I must be very lucky because many vets do charge way beyond this for small pets like hamsters, mice and gerbils. x
