Default Syrian-ears are black

Hello,
I noticed my syrian's ears are black around the edges. I did some searching, and ear mites seem to be most common response. They look almost exactly like this picture at the top of this article, but the insides of his ears look pink like they normally do. There aren't any little black dots on the inside like in the pic.

We did have a VERY cold spell for a while, and my apartment isn't the warmest, so I'm wondering if frost bite is a thing that could happen to hamsters? In my searching I didn't really see anything saying yes.

Any help would be appreciated. He's eating and is active like normal.

Frostbite is unlikely. If it had got cold enough to cause frostbite damage you would have seen other symptoms first, probably hibernation. How long have you had him, could it just be that his ears are getting darker with age?

I got him a couple months ago, but his age is unknown. I can tell he's full grown at least, so maybe?

Will he let you get close enough to sniff his ears? Ear mites often have a smell but they also cause icky brown stuff inside the ear. You say they're pink inside though so it's probably just pigment you're seeing. Some hammies have what are basically freckled ears

That pic looks like a healthy ear to me, anyone else think? It's just showing an ear, not an ear with mites. The article says watch out for redness. The black specs in the pic look like pigment to me-- too evenly spaced to be randomly moving mites.

LOL. Is it?! I was looking at pictures I took of him before, and they look a lot darker than they used to be. Hopefully it's nothing, and I just overreacted. I'll try smelling them once he wakes up.

He's my first syrian if you can't tell.

His ears are definitely darker than they used to be, but they don't smell funny and he's not showing any other symptoms. The insides of his ears look fine from what I can tell. I'm just going to keep an eye on him. Thanks!

Good His ears may just be naturally changing a bit as he ages. But good for you for noticing and asking about it! Very impressive
