Unhappy Old/dying hamster... what to do?? :'(

Hi,

I used to have an account a while ago but forgot the log in.

My Syrian is dying I think :'( Sitting here crying and don't know what to do.

He is coming up for 3 years old which I know is old for a hamster.

He's lost 8grams in weight in 48 hours, and hasn't touched much food. I've gave him cuddles and tried to give him water, which he took earlier (7pm - uk time) but he won't take any now (1-am).

I really don't know what to do, he's not showing that he is in pain, but he's not really moving much as it seems a struggle.

Any help please??

I've just had my dwarf hamster pass away just over a month ago... this is too soon! :'(

xx

Sorry to hear about the passing of your dwarf hamster. So heartbreaking when it happens.
3 years of age is a great age for a syrian, hamsters can get quite fussy when they get older.
What are you feeding him?
Try dried mealworms, scrambled egg, baby food, mashed potato along with his normal food.
You might have to take him to the vet if he deteriates.
You could also try mashed veggies.
What's his name?
I have my fingers crossed. Keep in touch,

Hello Thurinth. I am up at this hour...,12:45 a.m. NY time because my Syrian, Ted E. Bear is also dying. My beautiful Ted E. has had a wonderful life with me and I love him dearly. I know it is his time and I am making things as comfortable as I can. It really is all you can do for your little one. My other 2 hams, 1 dwarfie and another Syrian are around the same age as Ted E., although they seem to be okay. Just make sure your little one is warm and tell him it is okay to leave. My boy is only 19 months old, but he has always been very tiny and was a rescue ham. Your furry is a wonderful age and had to have had a great life to reach such an age. As much as we love them, their lives are so short. I am wishing the same for your hammy as I am for my own...that they go on to the Bridge gently as possible, where there is no more illness or pain. I am so sorry this is happening to you.

Unfortunately this didn't post till about 24 hours later.

He deteriorated through the night and we ended up taking him to the vet
He wasn't wanting food or water (I was putting more small seeds in his food since it was all he could muster).

It turns out he had a growth in his stomach too which was most likely a tumour. He was pts on Saturday morning

My house is just so empty now. We've went from 4 animals to 2, in 6 weeks. I miss them both dearly.

His name was Toffee. He was so friendly and curious, but also very stupid. We needed to take the platforms out his cage a while ago since he would struggle to get up them. He refused to use the ladders/ramps.

Our dwarf hamster that passed notlong ago was called marble. Although they were different types of hamster, they both would be sociable together when we had them out.

RIP Toffee & Marble.

I'm so sorry for your loss of two such beautiful hamsters, I can imagine how empty it must feel without them & how much you must be missing them.
Play well at the bridge little Marble & Toffee.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your two hamsters. They were both gorgeous and her obviously well loved and well cared for.

Goodnight, Marble and Toffee, sleep tight.

Such sad news about Toffee. You did the right thing by putting him to sleep.
He's no longer in pain. You gave him a loving and happy life.
Remember all your memories of him, they'll be loads that will make you smile, laugh out loud and cry, you'll have good days and bad days but in time each day will get a bit better.
Thinking of you.

I am sorry to see this, but also glad that he is not in anymore pain. It's also really difficult to lose several hams in a short period of time. It's like you didn't have the time to catch your breath and grieve on ham before the second also leaves you. {hugs} for you with much sympathy. Play well at the Bridge small fluffs. You will be missed. (I had a dwarf hammy names Toffee)

I'm sorry for your loss sweets, it seams so unfair that you had to lose two of your hamsters so close to each other.
