Movable lump?
Hi, my 17 m/o female robo has been having some issues lately. She has a skin problem that isnt affecting her greatly but i was told it was because of inbreading, the only thing is that she doesnt have much fur and i can see her skin. Yesterday I noticed a small lump on her left side between her shoulder and her ear. The lump is small and it moves around, is this just food in her pouch or should i be more worried?

Re: Movable lump?
It sounds a lot like pouched food, especially if it's hard. If it's still there after a day though, it could be impacted food, or a growth of some sort. Hamsters don't usually carry their food around for a long time, they'll just take it to their nest and empty their cheeks.

no currently im not using anything, her skin is getting quite bad though, its not mites or anything because she has been tested for it, she keeps going bold, then it gets better, then it gets bad again. She doesn't loose her appitite and is very active

at the moment no, some times her skin is ok and then sometimes its not. She looses all her fur and then it all grows back. she has slightly dry skin but i was told it was because of inbreading. I live in spain and the vetanry system is quite behind in small animals.

Re: Movable lump?
If itsn't pouched food, moveable lumps can just be cysts in pets or humans sometimes (although I'm not sure about hamsters). Our first dog developed two almost egg-sized lumps on either side of her - the vet said they were just 'fatty tissue' she lived with them for years and no problem. In humans, moveable lumps are seen as usually benign, fixed hard lumps are more of a worry.

Re: Movable lump?
Pouched food, or a benign cyst probably. As for pouched food, an etiquette question:
Are we supposed to notice when they pouch food in front of us? Or are we supposed to forget about the tasty morsel and say "Oh my goodness, we is a hungwy hamster! Where did it go!?!
Problem is it's too much fun really to confront them with "I SAW THAT!!!" you have a big PISTACHIO NUT riiiiight HERE!!!!!! and they look all innocent and try to change the subject.....
I start feeling guilty though and put them back in the cage to hide their 'secret stash' and then they come out and off we go again......

Re: Movable lump?
Yup - I need to get some kind of routine sorted out. Treats and food tempt Charlie out of the cage and then help keep him tame, but then he goes in his ball with full pouches and instead of running around in the ball, sits in the corner, a piece of chicken comes out and he sits in the ball and eats it. Need to do ball first, food after from now on.
Does anyone else have this by the way? If Charlie drops a bit of food that has been pouched, he won't touch it again afterwards.

Re: Movable lump?
I think they will touch it if you put it in with other unpouched food? But they certainly don't seem to want to pick it up when they accidentally spit it in your face It's more of that, oooh, where did that come from? hammy magical thinking. Me? Hoard? Pish! Never!
