Default Kodys Sore Bits

I noticed last night Kodys penis was looking pretty sore, and there was se discharge.
I wiped it down with a weak saline solution and cotton wool, but he wasn't happy about it being touched at all.
It really does look sore poor little guy
So this morning as it wasn't looking any better and the discharge has returned I have taken him back to the P@H store I got him from.

I reminded them they failed to do a health check. Hey, they didn't even sex him! They only knew he was a boy because I informed them he's a LH and only male LH's have such an impressive skirt.

To my knowledge the store will be covering his vet fees as he was most likely sold to me this way.

But in the meantime while I wait for a vet can anyone offer any ideas what may be wrong with Kodys bits?
I can't take a picture right now, but basically he's red and sore and discharging.
Keep your paws and fingers crossed everyone x

It's most likely a slight infection. Sometimes pups that have been taken away too soon from mum will suckle on each others 'bits' and can make them sore. If there were a lot of babies in the tank he may have been bitten of suckled on and this has set up an irritation.
Get him seen soon as if the penis swells a lot it can cause problems passing urine. The penis should not be out as they are normally retracted so gently ease it back using vaseline or KY jelly if need be. Hope the vet can help x

Ouchie! Don't worry about replying to my PM. I'm glad the vet at P@H will see him, looks like they ignored quite a bit before selling him.

Sound advice as always from Soufflé.

I've nothing to add.
Just wanted to say hope Kody gets on ok.

It’s good that you are vigilant and saw there was a problem as soon as you did.

All fingers and paws are crossed here for little Kody. x

I'm typing as I drive (stuck in traffic) so I'm sorry about typos.

Anyway he has been seen and the vet agrees there is a slight infection but no evidence of a wound. He assumes it's internal.
He has prescribed .5ml of baytril twice daily. Anything I should know before dosing him?
Side effects etc etc. how to combat the side effects?

It is normally ).05ml for hamsters. Can you check that dosage and the concentration. It is like one drop! Sometimes vets presecribe 0.5 or 1ml in 100ml of drinking water and assuming the hamster drinks 10ml they get the same dosage as the drop. They don't take the water though we find so better dosed with a syringe.
Let us know when you get home on the dosage.

we're home and I gave Kody his first dose - man, I've never had to do that before he struggled and pushed it away - little monkey, but in the end, persistence prevailed and I got the little blighter to take his meds!
I offered him a little lick of plain, natural yogurt afterwards but he wasn't interested. He's now snoozing, on his head, as usual!

He was an absolute wonderful boy today both on the journey, and for the vet. The vet was nervous about picking him up - he said he has been bitten by quite a few hamsters xD I offered to scruff him for him but he was adamant, "nope, I'm the vet, I have to master this" lol, Kudos to the guy for wanting to get better!
Kody behaved very well, despite having only been resident in Chez Spyro for a few days. He's already quite tame and used to being picked up/scruffed. The vet didn't get bitten - much to his surprise and he actually commended me on my care and knowledge woohoo! He said to have had a ham for barely a week and to already have him so friendly I'm obviously doing something right!

A very nice, positive vet consult, which, granted shouldn't have been necessary, but at least Kody being with me meant the problem got spotted early on and dealt with and I do have to say, the level of sales care (health and sex checks etc) was severely lacking at this particular store, however, this was not my local, I had to travel an hour away for this store and I can honestly say, my local is WAAAY better and I will be sticking to my local store from now on. They ALWAYS health check and sex. ALWAYS.

Should I be making a complaint regarding the very poor practices of that store?
Oh, and, with Baytril do I need to watch out for upset tummy - lack of good bacteria etc? should I be giving him anything from day one to help avoid problems?

I hope he feels better soon and I'm glad the vet consult went well

We've never had problems with pets on baytril but we do sometimes offer a probiotic to be on the safe side

Should I offer this in his water - like I usually do? Or on his food?

If I put it on his food is he likely to eat it or just ignore the food that has it on?
Or should I just be offering him licks of natural yogurt?

Or yogurt and probiotic in his food/water...
Stupid newbie questions, I know, but I am a newbie when it comes to administering medication.. gah so many questions.
