Er... Its up to you really. We just give it in yoghurt but the main thing is to make sure its a few hours apart from the baytril really (else the antibiotic could just kill the bacteria in the probiotic too)

ok, thankyou for the super fast answer

How many hours apart should I be giving him his Baytril doses? The vet probably advised me, but he had such a thick Russian accent it was hard to follow everything he said... nothing against Russians, or the vet, its my own fault really. I'm just terrible with accents and I should have gotten him to write it all down very thoroughly...

He had his first dose when we got home.. I think it was about 4pm..?
I usually give the hams more food around 7-8pm, so would probiotic be ok offered then? and then his next dose of Baytril at? - it doesnt matter how late, I'm a night owl..

You can either add a probiotic like ProC (from P@H) to his water or sprinkled in some food. If you add to water it does need changed frequently as it grows algae in the bottle and goes horrid. We find a pinch in a teaspoon of porridge or sprinkled on a wet food is good. It should be given as far as possible timewise from the antibiotics or else they kill the good bacteria.
You could give a teaspoon of live yogurt instead or as well but just watch his tummy with milky stuff in case he is one of the ones that it doesn't agree with.
We find the swaddling technique - wrapping in a small towel with just the head sticking out, then putting the syringe in the side of the mouth is best. Baytril tastes foul (I tried it) so he won't like it. Hope he is better soon.

you *tried* Baytril? bleauck! sorry, that wasn't the only bit of your message I paid attention to, I promise!

I think I might try the wet food suggestion... and sprinkle it into some porridge. He's never had porridge, but my other hams have, and they've never had a problem with it. To avoid any ill affects from dairy, I will make the porridge with water - sorry Kody... please eat it anyway!

As I'm making porridge for Kody bear I think I'll make extra, give my kids some as a late night before bed munch and make them share with the rest of the hamsters

For his first dose, I scruffed him and was persistant with poking the syringe to his mouth, he of course didn't want the alien thing anywhere near him and I was amazed (not to mention all squeeee) when he used his paws to push it away (very adorable!) - he didn't seem overly pleased when I managed to get it in, he gave me the stink eye while I did my victory dance and then turned his fluffy behind to me when I offered yogurt as a peace offering... looks like I'm in the.. er.. hamhouse? (doghouse) as it were... -sigh-

Ok, well, I'm assuming having two doses of Baytril per day, means they should be administered about 12hrs apart? so, if I make sure to get probiotics into him around 6hrs after a dose (and so 6hrs before his next one), we'll be onto a winner, right?

We usually give baytril about 12 hours apart if we can and probiotics six hours after a dose sounds about perfect to me

Between our metacam and baytril, the baytril at least smells better. It's fruity. The vet tech suggested doing metacam first, then the baytril. I'll have to try that technique too, Souffle. Java was pretty good this morning (I scruffed and put it in) though she did try to bat it away.

12 hours apart is ideal. Our dosage is 6:30/6:30, so I'm hoping to push it later by a bit each day so I don't have to wake up quite so early... hehe. Probiotics at 6hours sound good to me. Enough time to get into the system, without being wiped out.

Woohoo! Glad to know my common sense way of approaching this is going to work!
Given that I gave Kody his first dose at 4pm... Ugh. 4am. Do I really want to be administering medication to a wriggly ham at 4am. Bleh.
I'll still be awake no doubt...

Kody is just on baytril Hekomi, thankfully! Administering one med is difficult enough but 2? Agh. Poor Java.

Eep, yeah, 4am, not good. Try to push it forward by a half hour each day perhaps? I know Java's on hers for three weeks, so I have the ability to shift it around (ideally 7:30/7:30 would be better for us).

Luckily Java only needs the metacam at night.

I only licked a drop! It's very bitter. Metacam is nicer as it is sweet! Septrin is best of all and tastes of bananas. Ours grab the syringe for that!

Poor kids - *imagines them being forced to eat gruel for supper in little wooden bowls

I don't think you need stay up till 4am! Do it at 6 then go from there

Haha, Souffle! I was told our Baytril was sweet, like fruits, and the metacam was yucky. You know I'm going to have to confirm this when I get home now, right?

TBH if we all treated our kids with as much love and attention as we do our hamsters, I personally think we'd be good parents. Though maybe modifying some things... but a crib is like a bin cage, right?
