Unhappy I Think my Hammie has a cold

Hi Guys,

I'm having trouble finding a definitive answer for whats going on with my hamster Pancake so I'm hoping you can help.

She has always been super active since we got her and just a little angel. This past weekend I had to take her to my other home and have her there for the weekend because I was going to be away from my apartment for 4 days and I didn't want her to be alone.
When she was at my house she was fine the first day but the second day their was a fowl odor that was coming out of her cage. I replaced what bedding I could but I had just cleaned the whole cage 3 days prior.
Then the next day she had piled all the bedding away from her nest and all over my floor. Whenever I would look for her she was either sleeping or had all her food in her mouth.
Which I felt like she wasn't able to keep her food safe.

I didn't notice anything was seriously wrong till last night when I brought her back to my apartment. Usually she would run for long times out in her ball but she ran for a few seconds and then stopped. Whenever I would grab her ball she would be sneezing.
She has NO discharge from her nose, no urine stains or anything that would indicate wet tail. Nothing in her eyes or anything discharge. Her teeth don't seem over grown and there is no sign of any injury.
She is still eating but she wont exercise and she's sleeping a lot.

I've been reading about warm milk and honey in her bottle to help her.
Is there anything else I can do? Is this just a stress cold or is my baby not ok? I feel terrible seeing her like this.
I plan on going to a pet store today to buy whatever she needs to get better.

Please advise
Thank you
Love Kate

Honestly, I think it was just the stress of moving her home to a different place. She very well may have held onto her food for the reason you said...not feeling safe. I would just monitor her for now and see if she settles back in her regular home. If she still has any oder, that I would have her checked by a vet. Female hams can have UTI's and uterine infections that create oders. Also, how old is Pancake? Hopefully, this is all because of the house switch and she'll settle again.

Thank you for your quick response.

Im not sure how old pancake is because when I purchased her from the pet store she was the biggest one there. Doing so research I guess 5-6 months. She has less fur around her eyes which I thought was another indication of older age. But here is a picture of her.

Thanks

Ah, she's not really old then. Her fur looks lovely and plush. She looks like my Nutmeg & Ted E. Bear. . For now, just watch her. There are lots of folk on here to help, so keep us up to date on how she does. By the way, Welcome to Hamster Central!

My Goldens are shown below. Nutmeg first, then Ted E.

I agree, it sounds like stress, but I'd keep a close eye just in case. The sneezing is strange - does it happen often, or just a few times? Could it be dust budding her? What kind of bedding is she on?

I had a mixture, this dried corn cob and care fresh natural. I don't really like either so I wanna switch. As for the sneezing it has been quite frequent for the last little bit. But she is constantly rubbing her nose.

Anytime a hammy owner is very concerned, I'd say check with a vet. Lots of sneezing and constant rubbing of her nose could be the beginnings of a respiratory infection. If this is the same bedding you usually use for her, it shouldn't be an issue suddenly like that. If she's still like this by tomorrow morning, see a vet. It'll put your mind at ease and help her if she needs medication. For now, you could give her plain toilet tissue to nest in. If the sneezing eases, that'll be your hint that the bedding needs to be changed.

Ok thank you, I will try that. As for the honey milk, has anyone ever used it or had success with it?

I don't have much income so a vet trip might be too much for me

I honestly have never used, or heard of, honey milk with hamsters. So, I can't tell you the answer to that. Hopefully someone else on the site can give you more info on it. Keep Pancake out of any drafts and see that she has lots of fresh water available.
